Sheriff investigates assault of inmate

Matagorda County Sheriff Gary Mathis ordered an investigation of an assault that took place involving an inmate Friday morning, Oct. 2.

Mathis would not confirm allegations, made by Jessica Perales, the inmate's sister, that a Matagorda County Sheriff's Office jailer assaulted the inmate.

"An incident that there was an assault in the jail was reported to me about 1:30 this afternoon," said Mathis in a Friday afternoon phone conversation.

"I have assigned an investigator to the case and he is currently taking statement and trying to find out the facts of the case."

Mathis said he has been in contact with the family members of the inmate and that he knew of no reported injuries to the inmate.

Mathis said the inmate is in a safe area while the investigation takes place.

seriously....you people are still doing this?? everyone knows Mathis is a screw up. all we can do now is keep track of every, single, little thing he does wrong that doesn't somehow get "fixed" and use it all to get his ass outa there in 4 years. there's nothing anyone can do about him being in office right now except Mathis and the only way he can do anything is if he screws up bad enough that he either quits or legal action is taken and he is made to leave. we all know that mathis didn't win because EVERYBODY voted for HIM; he won because Mitchell's supporters were just a little on the "cocky" side you could say, and thought he "had it in the bag" so they didn't bother coming out to vote; if they had, he would have won and we all know that. so lets just watch mathis dig his grave and then in 4 years we can watch him lay in it!

If your talking about the assault and the newspaper article, you are definitely right. it is kind of hard to hide something when the lies your telling are in black and white for the whole county to see! he was told about an assault in the jail, but told the family he had not received any reports of an assault??? which was it mathis? not only are you a liar but your a bad liar!!! you can't do ANYTHING right!!

Mathis is the luckiest man I know, first he screws a good man out of a job, then he screws county employees out of theirs. In any other place but Matagorda County, a class action lawsuit would be in order. And flat out lying to the public about an assault in the jail? Taxpayers, hang on to your pocketbook, CHANGE is acommin.

Well I guess Mathis doesn't have anyone to run that jail right now. The Captain is gone though he didn't do much anyway from my understanding. The Lieutenant she's gone & I have heared that she knew more than them all. I have heared alot of good thing about that girl. Good luck to the two that has taken their place because you will never be able to fill those shoes!

Many have already traveled their paths pretty much in the same manner. I guess living up to a really good sheriff is a tough thing to do, so you compromise what little integrity you fooled people into believing you had by coverups, lies, corruption, video tape ..... anything to keep from being exposed for what you really are. I am not surprised by this behavior and to you idiots who voted this 3 time all american drunk driver into office, don't do us anymore favors.

Well they've done it, 1st it was Mrs. Thompson, then Ms. Lewis, Mr. Bustos & now Mrs. Dell!! Thanks Sheriff you have no idea what you're doing. If you haven't heard around the Office and around Town you & the Chief are a joke and you will not be voted for the next term! Our department has fallen, fallen because of Poor Leadership. It was not like this last year! It was not because of money we stayed! It was because with Mr. Mitchell we where a FAMILY! Something you clearly have no idea of the meaning!

To Last to Know you are right the LT. new a lot to run that jail. But if you think that the Capt. did not do much from hear say, why don't you call him and let him tell you instead of hear say. That is a good man, he was professional to the public and to his staff, and fellow employees! He also new how to run that jail. But I guess you are the last to hear that also. Talk about not doing nothing you need to go see for yourself.

First to Know, I have to say that you are completely right! It takes a team to run a jail, the Lt & Capt worked well together to make sure that was done! As you have said it is all hear say and that's all it is! I'm going to tell you whats bad is that the now Lieutenant, is so pathetic she has to make up her own stories about the old Capt & Lt. Saying that they had been fired for having a relationship. This is so far from the truth! Maybe infact it would be easier for her to explain how she had ( 2 ) non-professional affairs with inmates & ( 1 ) with another High Ranking Officer with another Agency?

It's about time this topic was put to bed. Mitchell's down the road, the department is run by a bunch of blubering idiots (litterally) thieves, liars, and corruption is widespread. What did you expect from a man who ran his campaign the same way and sports a criminal record? I feel bad for the employees that have been screwed over, but if they didn't get out and beat doors down in support the best man for that job .... it is what it is.
