Being adopted is not the answer to the foster care system. Being adopted automatically turns a child into a 2nd class citizen. John Davis, your mother saved you from a lifetime of discrimination.
1. Adopted children have their original birth certificates sealed upon adoption. A fictional "amended" one is issued listing his/her adoptive parents as the biological parents. This is legalized fiction. Adoptees in California and 43 other states cannot access their original birth certificates as they are sealed from them FOREVER. A person's family lineage, history, ethnicity, culture are all SEALED and ERASED.
2. Many adopted children end up in abusive homes where they are molested, beaten and/or killed. Children relinquished for adoption do NOT have representation in court (CASA) to protect them from being adopted by unfit people. CASA's should be appointed to every child being adopted to ensure that the prospective parents have passed drug, psychological, and full background checks.
3. Adopted children with sealed birth certificates (identities) cannot do family tree assignments that are routinely assigned to California students. Both my children had them assigned to them and both had to leave them blank. If California's public school system wants family trees then it needs to ensure that the State of California unseals all sealed birth certificates.
4. People with amended birth certificates have a hard time getting hired into state and federal jobs. Amended birth certificates are also routinely rejected as proof of citizenship for passports and adoptees are subjected to higher fees for passports and for more proof that they are United States citizens.
The foster care system needs to be seriously overhauled. Right now it is designed to funnel children into the adoption industry ($5 billion/year unregulated industry) so the children are removed from the state's dole. It's all about money, people. Not about the children and their rights as citizens.
