I think retail would be fine, but it would need to be more like a well gaurded Home Depot, a few eating places, post office, Sporting goods, etc. Whatever it is, security is a main concern.

Really, retail stores. If you owned a retail business would you located it in the old dixie square. Not that I would discourge retailer to come to Harvey but any business in that mall would have to be concern with customers having their cars stolen beside internal and external theft. Beside that factor, let's look how under staff the Harvey Police Department is now. It would be impossible for the Police Department to cover the entire town and that mall. So much for security. Here is a suggestion, maybe outsourcing security will solve the problem, I don't think so. Yes, something should and has to be been done with that site and it should have happen a long time ago. Maybe instead of retailers, maybe the city should encourge an industrial parks training or convention sites.

You're right. Actually, I was in a rush & had to cut that short. I was, however, trying to think of stores with little interest to the losers in the community. Office parks of an industrial and/or light tech production would be much better.

If anyone on this site lives in Harvey and is seriously interested in coming together, contact me at hccharvey-org@yahoo.com. I'm looking to start an organization to serve the people of Harvey. If you are not a servant, want to do this for some opportunistic gain,or are part of some group already making the city worse, don't bother. Pass this message to others you think might be interested. Thanks

What about a help center or something of that sort.
What about a mentoring center for the old car dealer building on Dixie Highway.
What about a Food Depository. I think there should be something there to help the people of Harvey.
What about a soup kitchen to feed poor and homeless people. I would volunteer for that.
What about a parole office.
What about a ged prep building.

"What about a Food Depository. I think there should be something there to help the people of Harvey." ???????? What? The people of Harvey, obviousley do not even want to HELP THEMSELVES!! No one's listened to my suggestions for 6 years. You'd have to advertise on BET and cable stations to get their "Pop" their attention. I say this, as a challange, as a matter of fact. Where does the "general median opulation" of Harvey get most of it's media info, where one could actually bid for "public service free spots" about "citizens should become real citizens"? Where? I wager, BET, TeleMundo, and then the "Pop Oriented" Cable channels. Obviousley, not over 60% news oriented or public broadcasting channels. Harveyites will continue to be a "crib to stay in" untill people "pick themselves up", begin to stand up for what is right, and stop whining about this and that!

Your all getting it wrong except for the "bull doze" comment. Take the place down to the ground, resod it, add some sand traps and ponds, 18 holes and you have the Dixie High Golf Course back again! Get Tiger to endorse it when he makes a come back. Golfers tend to be finacially advantaged, so attracting these folks to Harvey would be a good thing. Some real estate gurus might see the potential of all the vacant land in town and start some rehabbing, regentrification, etc. Heck, maybe someone may have the insight to rebuild some of the factories there!

The land there is going to waste. Why not remove the remains of the "dead mall," recycle the metal, concrete and blacktop from the old parking area for new roads, etc.? Resod the whole area and have a nice golf course for people to go to. Or, take that acreage and grow some food out there for local use. It's just a big blighted waste now, taking in no tax revenue. There can be some immediate use for that land once all the derelict buildings and old parking area are removed.

Have the Blues Brothers come back and do a concert there that leads up to a demolition of the mall! Steve Dahl can come and do his thing like the Disco Demolition at Comisky Park in '79. The proceeds can go towards revitalizing the land there. Picture this: "Blues Bros Revival in 2011" (@ the Dixie Square Mall)! There's been Farm-Aid and all those other concerts to help people, why can't something like that be done for Harvey?

How about a nice peaceful cemetery? With Burr Oak being all messed up this could be an all around doable solution to two problems.

Hmmm...bring back "Raceway Park" and relocate it to where Dixie Sqare was! Or...start up the "Dixie HWY Dragstrip."
