SINCE 1972, AS THE TUTORIAL DIRECTOR OF DUKE ELLINGTON STUDIES, DEAN AND PROFESSOR OF PERFORMANCE GUITAR STUDIES AT UCLA, HAS COME LIGHT YEARS AWAY FROM THE HUMBLE AFTER HOURS JAZZ WORK IN THE EARLY '50'S AT THE WEST END HOTEL IN THE DETROIT, MI AREA. KENNY WAS FINISHING UP HIS DEGREE IN MUSIC AT WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY AND WAS ANTICIPATING HIS MOVE TO THE BIG APPLE.
RECENTLY DR.THOMAS L.HYATT, A STAFF PSYCHOLOGIST AT ONE OF THE VA HOSPITALS IN CINCINNATTI, OH, AND AN EXCELLENT TRADITIONAL JAZZ TRUMPET ARTIST, STILL PERFORMING, LIKE BURRELL, FOR OVER 50 YEARS, AND I WERE EMAIL DISCUSSING KENNY'S EARLY DAYS AND OUR EARLY AM VISITS TO HIS AFTER HOUR VENUE 56 YEARS AGO.
HAPPY 76TH BIRTHDAY COMING ON JULY 31, KENNY.

Happy Birthday, Kenny. Remembering July 31st ushers in your 76th. I'm also remembering those wonderful days (for me) of listening to you and Dad (Clarence Ringo) and the rest of the band practicing at our house for your week-end gigs. Its been more than 50 years. We've changed, but the music is just as sweet. Congratulations on your long and successful career. The best to you and yours.
