"If it wasn't for crippled kids, this guy wouldn't have had a job in the last 50 years." I completely agree. Acknowledging that he has raised more money for charity than anyone else in show biz history, the above statement still rings true. I've seen Lewis in interviews through the years, and he always comes off as too serious and sometimes even angry. I never found him to be funny, even during the early years. By 1956, he had (in appearance) outgrown the skinny, high pitched voice character he played with Dean Martin. He came up with a couple decent films ("The Nutty Professor" is one), however most of his stuff was forgettable.
An acquaitance of Jerry Lewis was Merv Griffin. Several years ago, Merv passed away from cancer. Jerry Lewis' reaction? "He deserved to die." Thats a quote. In Lewis' opinion, Merv did not seek medical help soon enough; hence the remarkably obnoxious and tasteless remark. Sounds like a real humanitarian, doesn't he? Really, I'll never know how Dean Martin (who became a much bigger star than Lewis (when the opposite was predicted during the time of their break up)ever put up with this creep.
