Most people do NOT know the difference between a sex PREDATOR (ie a pedophile) who has a diagnosed illness and preys on children VERSUS a poor boy who has a girl lie or change her mind about a 3 second sex encounter (he said-she said); or a 16 year old having consensual sex with a 15 year old. EVERYONE IS PLACED ON THE SAME REGISTRY --- MAKING THE REGISTRY USELESS.

I agree totally. Most states have a system that has three tiers. Only the ones who are considered violent or dangerous are on the tier that is on the list that the public see, but NOT Florida. My husbands crime was 33 years ago, we moved from tn where he only had to report once a year and he was on a list that only law officails see, not the general public. It has been 33 years and my husband has not had any charges, not even a traffic ticket. A perfect record, and still in florida he has to be listed and have his picture next to people who are out doing things today. It is additional punishment for a lifetime. For the family as well. I agree 100% with this comment. The Sex Offender registry in Fla. is a fraud - a feel good law to fool the public that politicians are actually doing something!! It does NOTHING. Cooey and others FAILED to register and did awful crimes.A registry did not matter!!! Meanwhile innocent, non-violent "offenders" (due to lying bitches who had State sponsored RAPE Coaches) have their constitutional rights violated. Out of control prosecutors and RAPE Coaches need to be reigned in!!!.

Florida's "Predator" designation does not indicate that the person is a pedophile. Predators are those with multiple convictions, multiple victims, and persons whose crime was particularly violent or whose victims are very young. Florida law calls for a four-year difference in age between victim and perpetrator in order to be considered a child molestation case. John Couey is classified as a "Sex Offender", the lower tier in the system. He had absconded from his registered address.

to Kevin 9/13 -- I assume you are an eductaed attorney. Technically you may be correct; but only you and 23 other people understand the actual law. Plus, as you know, the "written law" versus the "applied law" (by judges and others) are often NOT a match. hypothetical -- do you think that a DUI probation violation, followed by a "he said-she said" (believed to be consenual encounter) should yield the young man a spot on the Sex Predator list?? Did you'all see the news on 9/21/06, that a 22 year old female named Colleen Grear has been accussed of having sexual intercourse (3 times) with a 14 year old Boy. She is, of course innocent until proven guilty!!!(just like the guys who have their ass thrown in jail from minute 1).Sun Sentinel report.

I empathize and pray for you. I am sorry for your pain. Perhaps you miss the point -girls who LIE about RAPE marginalize the impact for REAL RAPE victims. I agree the registry is useless because everyone is catagorized under the same title, so to speak. Well I am so sick of everyone, The poor children. Well what about those who are going to prison because of the same peoples daughters being the enticer here. Ya know not all girls are as innocent as they are portayed. Yes, I have kids of my own, but I have also seen the girls who just keep pushing themselves on older guys. Even have fake I.D's to prove they are of age knowing damn well they are not. I’m a sex offender. I know just by saying that most already think of me as a pervert who rapes little children. That’s just the type of prejudice I’ve been dealing with for the last eight years. I’m not writing this to try and get sympathy. I think that we have a problem in this country and lately only one side of the coin has been showed. There are two sides to every issue. Not everything is black and white. This is my story. It all began when I was 18. I stole a computer and was put on probation. Then I turned 19 and fell in love with a 14 year old. I can already hear some calling me a pervert. To be honest my dad was 16 and my mom was 18. She didn’t go to jail. How much of an age difference is there between you and your love, parents, or even grand-parents? I’ll be the first to admit there are sick people in the world. And it’s because of them my life has become harder. I wonder how many people actually know what laws can make them an offender. Say you stop on the side of the road and get out and go to the bathroom. If caught and convicted you will then be a sex offender for the rest of your life. Back to my story. It was months before we started having sex. Then two years later she became pregnant. So because of that everyone found out and I went to jail. While I was in jail my public defender informed me I had a son. The state offered me twelve years. So after a year of fighting I plead no contest. During my sentence hearing all the facts came out and I was sentenced as a youthful offender. Off to prison I went. So I did my time in prison and finished it on probation. Regular probation, no sex offender probation for me. I wasn’t order to go to counseling or anything like that. Because I’m not a threat to anyone and the judge saw that. So she and I have two sons together and I still love her. I became unemployed about three weeks ago and finding it very hard to get a job other than day labor. I do well all the way up to the point of a back ground check. Seems no one wants to hire someone with my type of label. I can’t even get a job at McDonalds because they even have a section asking if you are an offender. I understand I broke the law but I’m still being punished. With all the new things I have to comply with and the police periodically coming to my house it definitely feels like double jeopardy to me. The systems broke. All offenders are lump under one label. No chance for someone like me to ever get rid of it. With all these new “feel good” laws giving the public a false sense of safety. Nothing can stop a pervert except jail or death. People only change if they want to. Some can say I belong in jail but I’ve told my story so you make up your mind. If you are going to have a list put everyone on it. Murders, drug-dealers, con- artist. How come someone convicted of selling drugs to minors gets treated better than me? Most politicians won’t go against the norm for fear of appearing soft on crime. But until more people get educated and the system gets fixed, people like me find it hard to live.

I feel your pain. My point is that Florida follows texas, and you know the rest. Our problem is that not enough of sex offenders are united. We need to fight the system and show the US supreme court that we are being discriminated against to the point were many become homeless, lose their wives, family, kids, and have their live's destroyed, even after they have served their time.

We need to make waves, cause commotion and petition the court's to the point to where they say, "Enough!, we are listening".

Our supreme court is dead against us, if they could they would sanctify the murder of each and every one of us. Even if our crimes were not against children.

Whats the point of going on if they continue to step on you? We need to sue the government and start a new law. We need to have them either pay and place us in housing, or create a state to where we can live in peace.
