Not really surprising considering the attitudes of:
Government – The tax incentives offered or not that attractive to even bring in major global investment let alone big block buster movie productions. If the government really wants to bring in that level of money they need to review their tax rules to make NZ a lot more attractive from a financial perspective. A lot of countries offer really great tax cuts to the film industry and that’s why Hollywood shoot their movies there. The problem here is purely greed. From a council perspective its expensive as permits need to be obtained, resource consents obtained and police permits granted. All of this is thwart with endless New Zealand style procedure driven red tape contradicting rules and senseless regulations which can differ from council to council
Unions – While they are a necessary evil, just as politicians are and about as useful as a garden gnome, they are good to have around to protect the little guy. The problem is in NZ the unions are weak and the only time anyone really ever hears of them is when then is a self serving need aAs is the case of the Hobbit. Unemployment is at a high atm and the production was really needed to boost the economy and the employment sector.
Companies and corporations – Do business with a NZ company once and its all bells and whistles and the red carpet get thrown out for you. Come round 2 and the attitude has now changed as they feel that you need them more than the company needs you as you are coming to them yet again. Customer service is as foreign a term as speaking Icelandic, and after sales service is a big no no and once the deal is done and the bill is paid the mentality is why we should spend any more time or money on the client with after sales customer satisfaction. Big time fail. The flp side to the coin is again government issues, as doing business in New Zealand is very expensive thank to the over regulation by the government and all its various departments that want a piece of your profits. As if paying tax wasn’t enough already. Its all greed again
NZ and Peter Jackson pulled off the Lord of the Rings and now have a big headed approach to the entire scenario.
Hopefully NZ have learnt a lesson from all this, being that NZ is a really small country and cannot go head to head with first world countries as NZ is not one and hopefully they main lesson NZ has learnt is never assume that you are holding all the Ace's because someone might have more up their sleeve than you have in your hand

The actors should have gone on strike halfway through the film. Then they would have had the power like the teachers. I bet some of those jobs for smaller characters could have gone on my site . So Its a complete loose for NZ. You always go on strike when you have the power. We can't just send our children to india to go to school or go to a doctors checkup in Thailand. YOU NEED THE POWER!
