India is young and will experience failed relationships. I'm sure she sees the part of the relationships that were precious to her. It is a difficult process of life and she wanted to express it in her music. Maybe she wanted her fans and/or those she had a relationship with to hear her out without any interruptions, comments and really listen to something she never said before. She may see later in life as she matures even more there is no need to express herself in her music the same way. I also think of Lauren Hill. I wish India well.

I wish there was some way she could read my comments because I speak for myself and others and wanted her to know how I feel.

Regarding her hair; I recall the best new artists awards going to Alicia Keys over India some time ago. "I wondered how she felt about it; but as she says now I am not my hair." Alicia Keys has great talent as India, but lets be honest with the music industry unfortunately they look at how a person's looks come closer to American standards of beauty. India's looks are beauty and the first on the planet I must say, but I listen to black talk radio and some of her hardcore fans I say some who found her to be an artist of independence and beauty, not just courage and bravery and someone making a statement because she wore lock have said she has turned them off wearing a wig (seen in Jet magazine) and a singing about why she is not her hair. It is a shame the comments about hair have gotten to her to such a degree because as far as wearing locks, its a difficult thing to do in an industry where westernized standards of beauty surpass any other ways of expression. It does in America however and India is not alone. In the 60's Cicely Tyson wore an afro and made films and just seemed so proud. Some blacks were ashamed of her and angry at her, but the majority thought she was beauty personified and independence. India is a beautiful woman no matter how she wears her hair and some people in the general public however, who wear locks looked upon her as someone to love and admire other than the typical way we see African-American women wear hair. She was not "our hero" but someone to for women to view who chose to wear natural flowing beautiful locks as a way of self-expression they could identify with. Its a shame there are not more women like India Irie wearing locks, doing their music and continuing on like its a part of them, and they do not feel others are trying to define them by their hair (their locks)or come up with reasons etc. There are so few women who wore them, we can count them on one hand (or natural hair) Macy Gray, Eraka Badu, Lauren Hill and Traci (she plays the guitar, I can't think of her last name and the artist who Nedeg....I can't think of her name, but she wore her hair bald, and also played guitar).

In the music industry though people make themselves over and over and over and over for the sake of who, why, themselves? I understand its necessary to make oneself over in the music industry for a lot of reasons and there are few except in the field of jazz who stick with their looks. I am talking about those who wear locks. Maybe, and I hope she sees the difference in the diversity of fans (she has always had), but perhaps wants more of and receives the awards now she so rightly deserved in the first place and now may get because those that make the decisions about who gets awards and who sells the most records because "of their looks" will see "she is not her hair."

I wish her the best.

Penda, which JET was IA in wearing a wig? Are you sure you got the full concept/idea?

IA wears wigs in her music video for "IANMH", symbollically. I went to her DC concert (F 21 July). She comes out in a long wig (the 1 ppl say makes her look like Naomi Campbell) and then @ the bridge of "IANMH:" she throws it off.

I think I'd have to get use to IA wearing wigs as well, I would not hate her for it...but IT'D NEVER HAPPEN bc IA is so happy to be her , happy with the way GOD MADE HER.

So that is y I am asking/writing are you SURE that you fully understood the JET article on her.
