Democrats voted at 9:50 PM on Thursday May 18, 2006 to block US companies from drilling off the coastal United States. This vote passed even though China, with an awful environmental record, will be drilling for oil within 50-100 miles of America's shores. Cuba announced last week that 36 oil wells are in the works, already.

So, Cuba, China, Venezuela, Brazil, Canada, India, and others may soon be benefiting from the energy reserves a few miles off our coast. But the United States, which is even more dependent on foreign oil than Cuba, is sitting on the sidelines. Unlike Cuba, which does not have the technical ability to drill for oil and gas on its own, the United States has always been a leader in deep ocean exploration and drilling. According to the U.S. Minerals Management Service, America’s deep seas on the outer continental shelf (OCS) contain 420 trillion cubic feet of natural gas (the U.S. consumes 23 TCF per year) and 86 billion barrels of oil (the U.S. imports 4.5 billion per year). However, federal government policies are preventing us from accessing that treasure trove of desperately needed energy.

No other nation in the world prohibits development of its offshore energy. But, incredibly, federal prohibitions on OCS drilling over the past 25 years have caused the United States to send trillions of dollars to overseas oil producers and have jeopardized our national security by making us dangerously dependent on foreign energy sources. According to the House Resources Committee, the United States sends around $500 billion annually to foreign energy producers, which is a major cause of our huge annual trade deficits and the continuing precipitous loss of our manufacturing base.

With Puerto Rico's Democratic primary approaching, Sen. Barack Obama may begin to face questions about two of his biggest supporters on the island. Governor Anibal Acevedo Vila, a co-chair of Obama's campaign in Puerto Rico was indicted by Federal prosecutors along with 12 others on March 27th in what prosecutors called the largest government corruption scandal in Puerto Rico's history. Vila was charged with receiving cash and gifts in the form of expensive suits, vacations for his family and children, and personal contributions to enhance his salary. Vila also is alleged to have had his credit card bills paid by private companies and his campaign debts paid by Puerto Rican business interests. Vila also stands accused of steering contracts to his fundraisers, based in Philadelphia. In all, the so-called "Philadelphia connection" netted $180,000 for Vila's 2004 gubernatorial campaign.

The victims of 911 were ignored the day Bush decided the oil in Iraq was more important than adequately answering an attack upon our shores.

I actually agree with you on the fact that our military is grossly inefficient in many ways and I believe we spend way to much money protecting the interests of others without fair monetary and phsical participation from those we protect.

Your point about our spending on this thread or on another one is well taken and puts things in perspective financially.

But... I agree with Obama that actual troop numbers need to be increased.
Other parts of the military need to shrink. It is ridiculous that we spend well over 600 Billion dollars a year on our military when China only spend 65 Billion and Russia only spends 50 Billion. We as you said spend more then the rest of the world combined and we are not getting our money's worth.
