"worries about inadequate winter supplies in the Northern Hemisphere and news of refinery problems"

WHY ARE THERE REFINERY PROBLEMS WHEN THE OIL COMPANIES HAVE BEEN MAKING RECORD PROFITS FOR THE PAST 5 YEARS?
WHERE ARE THE PROFITS GOING? WHERE ARE OUR ELECTED LEADERS?
WHICH OFFICIALS OWN OIL COMPANY STOCKS?

There are refinery problems because most refineries are over 30 years old environmental laws require complex and expensive formulations for gasoline that are tailored for each region of the country. Regulations need to be relaxed so new refineries can be built. Additionally, we need to increase off-shore drilling and drilling in the Alaska.

We are paying the price for not drilling in known oil fields in the U.S. and passing complex (expensive) environmental laws.

I said so on these pages in January. I wish I had been wrong.

When a billion Chinese climbed off their bicycles and decided they would rather drive [non US made] cars, it did not take an economics degree to figure this out.

Then I guess you know that Gas will be about $5.00 a gallon next Summer. Well I guess pool sales will go up because no one is going to drive anywhere. We did this to ourselves America! We use to be a Manufacturing Economy. Now we are a Service Economy. America will be just like Europe within the next decade. Asia will be calling the shots then. Actually they already are. Soon we won't be able to maintain our Military. At that point China will take over. Our Children are already being Brainwashed by the Government to not fight it. America is Toast and our Youth are not being trained to do anything about it.

I know this is wrong but can we convince the Chinese to get back on their rick-shaws. It would save me from having to sell my 3 ton pick-up.

Many households will face the question of Heat or Eat this winter; many others will be unable to pay their reset subprime mortgages.
But not to worry!

It would help for a start if they lowered the temp in the white house and congress to sixty degrees for a few weeks.

Then a tax on excess profits might look a little better.

You did it, I did it, many others did it...

And the point is that LIPA COULD HAVE DONE IT FAR MORE EFFECTIVELY THAN THEY DID.

They keep reinventing incompetence. With LIPA, it's an art form: how best to disadvantage customers.

WHY ARE THERE REFINERY PROBLEMS WHEN THE OIL COMPANIES HAVE BEEN MAKING RECORD PROFITS FOR THE PAST 5 YEARS?
The answer is that there hasn't been a refinery built in the US in the past 25 years. First of all, attempts to build these incredibly expensive facilities have been blocked by environmental groups in several US states. Second of all, the refining business was absolutely dismal for many years when oil traded in the 15-20 barrel range. Oh, and don't look to the politicians to solve your problems. More regulations and higher taxes will only make the situation worse! Buy a smaller more fuel efficient car, because this only the beginning.

Gas prices will fall this summer. The reason is that the election is coming up.

The whole world is on the verge of collapse. There will be much fewer currency floating around. Guess what oil bastards, That means much less money coming at you. And as poverty increases, all rich people walking or driving the streets will be eaten up by all the animals. This is not far fetched because the world crash will be a very bad one.

Good point about not building refineries, but who's backyard should it go. A refinery cost about a billion dollars and no-one wants one in their area. Every time an oil company wants to build a refinery the environmentalists get their panties in an uproar and squash it.
