Phyllis Coates and Noel Neill from TV combine for 50% of the total vote. So the TV show Lois is still #1 50 YEARS after the last showing. It shows what a profound effect this show had on the baby boom generation. George Reeves was very close to Christopher Reeve in similar polls. What an amazing and underrated show Superman was on TV.

Great article! I never knew Helen Slater was a native New Yorker - Long Islander - like me!

An article about Smallville and other "Super girls" and you don't mention Smallville's Lois Lane, Erica Durance? Perry White would not be pleased!

You didn't list Teri Hatcher's Lois Lane? Wow, what an amazing omission. She's always been a fan favorite of Lois Lanes and she's by far the most famous actress to play her now being on Desperate Housewives. Sorry about no mention of Erica Durance from Smallville either. She's awesome.

No offense to Erica Durance or Teri Hatcher, but most of us baby boomers have but it sounds like anyone who votes for them thinks that this was a BEAUTY poll! Sure they're hot, but Margot Kidder and Noel Neill didnt have to be sexpots to bring something to the Lois Lane role. I'm sure the under-25 crowd thinks Paris Hilton would be a good Lois.

Great story, Joe! My vote goes to Noel Neill (even her real name sounds like the stuff of comics ... although it's probably a stage name ... but I digress). Even though I grew up at a time when Christopher Reeves was the Superman that everyone was talking about, it was the George Reeves' Superman that truly captivated my attention as a child/teenager (right along side Johnny Weismuller's Tarzan). The stories were well-written, and didn't have to rely on special effects or big-name actors to keep your attention.

Best of luck to Helen Slater. I think she'd be an excellent addition to Smallville.

Long live Truth, Justice and the American Way (as un-PC and xenophobic as that may sound)!

What about Erica Durance, who plays Lois Lane on Smallville, for some reason she's been left out of the list.

It will be good if a modern version of Supergirl can be produced. I believe Helen Slater did a very credible job in herr role as Supergirl. It was a p[ity that the script was not so credible.
