TO BILL HEYER,
HOW DO YOU FIGURE THAT RAP SPAWNED FROM ROCK AND ROLL?
DO YOU THINK THE PEOPLE IN THE HOOD WERE LISTENING TO ZEPPELIN WHEN THEY CAME UP WITH RAP?
RAP IS OBVIOUSLY DERIVED FROM DISCO, R&B AND DANCE MUSIC. JUST LISTEN TO EARLY RAP.

THEY MAY HAVE SPLINTERED OFF THE SAME ROOTS, BUT THEY ARE IN NO WAY RELATED.
SO WHY DOES RAP HAVE TO BE HONORED AT THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME?

"RAP HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH ROCK AND ROLL"

Was Run/DMC's collaboration w/ Aerosmith rock, rap or both? Tone Loc's sampling of Eddie Van Halen? Even Vanilla Ice's sampling of Queen? Go to a Kid Rock show and catalog out the "rock" from the "rap" (and the country, which is truly unique). Or a Beastie Boys.

Then go look at when ZZ Top started adding synth'd beats layered on "real" music and decide when they stopped being a "rock" band.

And all my examples are years old already.

Rock evolved from other forms and other forms have evolved from Rock.

Rush wouldn't qualify as rock when rock meant Carl Perkins and Buddy Holly. Be careful with your narrow definitions or the rock and roll hall of fame becomes your own cd collection / mp3 playlist and nothing else.

Do not know what the big deal is. The Hall of Fame asked and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five accepted. As a poster said above Hip Hop is has been an influence on rock and roll for years now and all the original rappers sampled rock records. I am not a particular fan of hip hop but that has to do with my age and is my problem not the Halls. One unfortunate result of all the publicity that Grandmaster Flash got is that it was overlooked that REM became the first alternative act inducted.

If history will remember Grandmaster Flash's induction Patti Smith owned the night in every way.

Since everybody else is doing it my nominees for next year are Run DMC continuing what was started this year,X and Dead Kennedys who moved punk forward,Kate Bush who is considered England's best female vocalist whose innovations are to long to list.

Has the Rolling Stones ever been inducted ?
How about U2, Fleetwood MAC, Pat Benatar and Joan Jett? Any of these?
Yes to the Stones and U2. I'm not sure about Fleetwood Mac, Pat Benatar and Joan Jett. Knowing who runs this thing, probably not.

rap is not music-it is an example of selling an image and an image alone. An image that is based on crack dealers...according to chris rock. He said crack is why you see the bling and everything nowadays. Crack started rap-do I need to say any more?

Also-alot of bands arent inducted...I was told..because the r n r hall of shame is only a US museum. So-thats why rush yes..etcetc..arent in there. Makes sense I guess..but it should be for all rock and roll.

Its a business...and they realize hip hop is huge so now they are going to start inducting hip hop to get the audiences. That makes it an entertainment thing...not a rock and roll thing.

Rap sucks...if you like it..your an idiot

Hey, "NO DOG," follow the dots, here: Rock 'n' Roll is a hybrid of R & B (Rhythm and Blues) and Rock-a-billy (Country & Western). Throw in some jazz and you have Rock 'n' Roll. Rap (or hip hop) is an off-shoot of Rock 'n' Roll. Simple as that. Go back to school! Elvis DIDN'T invent Rock 'n' Roll; neither did The Beatles. No, not EVEN Led Zeppelin! Rock 'n' Roll used to be called "Race" music because of its early, black heritage: "Big Mama" Thornton,
Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino and Bo Diddley. Rap music has the same roots. Rap belongs in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, why not?
Country stars (Brenda Lee) are in BOTH the Country AND Rock 'n' Roll Halls of Fame.

So what you are saying is rap is rock? Rock may be a hybrid-but its ROCK!! I agree with NO DOG-will they be inducting disco too now? LOL-

[email protected] hall of fame is a business-they just want to expand to a market-a market that helped creat brittany spears boy bands and clothing lines. It really isnt about music now is it?????!!!!!
