The "Pick Yourself Up" song, and afterward, the dance, is one of Hollywood's classic scenes in one of its most wonderful films. I like it better even than "Singin' in the Rain"...because the dancing has a bit LESS continuity, I find that Kelly goes a bit too far, in that the dancing is TOO submerged in everyday activity. For me, it takes away from the super specialness of the dance...which is quite special in "Swing Time". I also find the black and white filming, wonderfully evocative, with the snow scenes...the music superior...the acting more moving, and humor less corny...as I thought Fred was corny...until you see Gene! In any event, one is quibbling about the best of the best...when comparing Fred and Gene....and one really doesn't need to choose.
