Doug McIntyre: No one's laughing at this rant by mayor

Full story: LA Daily News

That was the punch line to the late Gilda Radner's classic Emily Litella rants on "Saturday Night Live." "Never mind!" would also make an apt title for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's State of the City address delivered Tuesday afternoon at the new LAPD headquarters on First Street.

I am wondering if employee were laid off would this make the Mayor a good Mayor? I think not. The Mayor has failed everyone and he has done no favorite to anyone. The part of his speech that it is time partner with private industry brings to mind one question, have we learned anything from Wall Street. I plan to sign the recall petition and who ever is voted to finish his term will be awakening moment. I really do not understand how we are constantly hearing in the news what the Mayor said and we never hear what the Mayor has done. Enough Already.....I thought his speech was more like a resignation speech except for he should have said I could have done better.

Has anyone noticed, one day we are doing good-the next day layoffs, then we found money no need to layoff, the we need to raise trash fees, telephone fees for police, then police have to be laid off, then we are in better shape. Then we are all going to have painful experiences, Mr. Mayor-you have been one painful experience. And what about your head of finances for the City with a DUI-now in rehab? This cannot be looking good for you-you know these photo ops are all on tape, I remember well, the citizens are fed up, this one may stick and good.

Villaraigosa will "solve" the "budge crisis" by selling our valuable public assets (e.g., street parking) to kick the can down the road to the next Mayor.

He will try to pitch the sales as "leases," but the "leases" will have 99-year terms.

Great column as always, Doug. And fast, too!

This mayor has no credibility...and, with many of us, he never did. However, the problems in Los Angeles and the State as well are systemic. I notice there is a renewed "recall the entire City Hall Crowd", yet that is just replacing one favored group over the other...We need a new city charter, with a strong mayor, an enlarged city council with legislative duties, and sever limits on lobbies...We do not need unions if the workers are protected by Civil Service codes...or the discard the civil service protections in favor of unions...one or the other. We need a strong mayor that is acountable...we need city council people, closer to the people they respresent so we can make them accountable as well...stop the revolving doors resulting from term limits....and get back to basic city services....LA used to be great...apathy has brought it so far down it will soon be Detroit del Mar.

That is no solution to anything....just rearranging chairs...no matter who gets in, the unions, the special interests, the developers, the money men and lawyers will rule, just as they do now....greater change is needed....and fast. The Valley should reconsider secession....we would be better off by far...

And he won't touch a dime of the money we're giving to the rash of babies being born here to illegal immigrants. God forbid we take a penny from the people that are coming here to take advantage of all the free services we have to offer. I can't believe people scratch their heads and wonder why our school system is in the toilet. Or why the city is always broke. Or why people and businesses are fleeing this city and state. The 800 pound gorilla in the room...

Lagriz, while I agree that the Valley should consider secession, it actually weakens your recall argument, unless you think a new Mayor of the Valley won't cave in to the same pressures.

by having iliegals voting when they shouldn't have been able, americans not caring who they vote in and the unfortunately the whole state is in the dumps! Been here for 26 years and have seen it flourish to go to the dumbs and it's all politics. Who they bring in, who pays for the Mayors second home, since he left his wife for the whore of a reporter and they didn't even last only to have him spend money on her, which was probably our taxes that paid for most of everything that he owns...can he have taxpayers pay for his second home? Probably yeah. Anyway...
Ex gang member doesn't care about LA, please he's dedicated to his homies...the layoffs were to expell the early retirements EARLY..incentives...give them more money for leaving early...hey mayor...we are broke and you want to pay them more money...you raised the business taxes so much that people left CA so they can afford to make any type of profit in another state. EDD is mostly for the employees that it really doesn't make sense to stay in CA due the the fact that anyone can make false claims on their employers and the ruling is mostly in thier favor. Where is the incentive to stay out here? Not much if you ask me...illegals and crooked people make more money abusing the system than helping us do anything of good to this state...Instead of trying to make this state awesome and attractive again, the mayor and other politicians just keep dumping on us and we keep voting for a democratic voice...shame on us!!!

Whether it's "never mind" or same old/same old, his speech was never mind because it was a ditto of same old/same old.

The best line for those of us "cynics" who have been paying attention, was "working with the private sector" to turn this around.

That's another one for the Webster's "Politician to English" dictionary.

The exact definitions is sell off everything in the city that makes a profit, because we're too stupid to hire people who can keep them profitable.

That translates to sell off things like parking structures for a one-time profit, and miss out on all future revenue.

You are 100% correct. You can blame business flight on taxes or whatever you wish. But the real bottom line on L.A. is that it is becoming a low class town instead of a major city. Everyone wants to lay off employees that work for the city. They are not the problem here. It's not their fault that the city is poorly (if at all) managed. The city needs to quit giving away money to accelerate the decline of L.A. by encouraging even more illegal aliens to root there. Stop the low income housing give away.($600K+). There is your balanced budget right there.

DUH!

I just down loaded the petition.

Why is it written in more Spanish than English?

In order to be a registered voter you must be a legal citizen of the United States. We assume that if you were born here, English is your 1st language.

If you are a naturalized citizen, you must speak English to obtain citizenship.

This is an insult to all of us legal citizens and an unnecessary expense to have it translated into a second language.

Nothing but a bunch of Latino's voted him in.That's why he changed his name to a more Hispanic sounding name. He caters to them..notice since hes been mayor how bad Los Angeles looks, its starting to look like Tijuana. He does nothing about immigration but instead restrict police from checking legal status of people they pull over. Then he makes Los Angeles a sanctuary city for illegals. We really need to get rid of this guy and everyone else like him. Every election he needs to get a bit more of 50% of the vote, that's how he wins, notice that LA is almost 50% Latino, who do you think their going to vote for?....That needs to change, He gets votes just because of his last name.....If this guy wins again there seriously needs to be a huge protest in Los Angeles. I hate what this city is starting to look like.

Sam I said the same thing on another article about the recall! I was so P*ssed off I couldn't see straight. I ash you, what Hispanic is not going to vote for this clown? And I don't care if they are naturalized or not. Where, I ask you, are the natural Americans of Latino decent, when the illegals are march through our streets demand amnesty? Why are they not mad as heck? Why are they not saying no to this crap?? That's what really makes me mad. We know half the voters are Mexican and the other half are illegals and what's left are the lazy "white" voters! Yes let's recal this midget jerk, but at the same time we need to have someone that's honest ready to take over when the slime bucket is gone. That person also needs to know that he has to take on the Unions and Lobbyist and that's a real challenge that 99% of the politicians are not up to!

Tony Estupido's mayor's private thoughts:

"If the city employee labor unions are happy and the productive citizens and businesses are really angry ... I get to keep my sweet salary and big, black Cadillac Escalade with full-time driver and personal police escort. Screw the taxpayers, I'm a failed attorney wannabe. Where else am I gonna find a sweet gig like this with my lack of skills and failed background? Hey, it's all about ME, the television cameras, and Latina television reporters, baby! Hell, do you seriously think I'd sacrifice for you nuisance taxpayers when I won't even sacrifice for my own family? Get a clue, esses"
