It was the summer before her freshman year in highschool and the boys were about to be juniors so they could drive. William M. was in the car.

"Baby Blue" was Jenifer's favorite song..."Somewhere Down in Texas" is rumored to be about her and I imagine he thinks of her when singing several of his songs..."I Saw God Today" must remind hom of her, especially the line, "my brand new baby girl..."

I remember jenifer the most while we were in 5th grade(travis). She had a best friend by the name of crissy. We had a crush on each other Or at least Iit seemed like. I know if crissy saw this she would know who I am. Recess was our time to hangout by the water fountains.
It was sad and still remember the day. Ive thought about her throughtout the years.

Wreck Kills Daughter Of Singer Strait
June 27, 1986|By United Press International

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS The highway patrol filed a charge of criminally negligent homicide Thursday against the driver of a car that crashed and killed the young daughter of country-Western star George Strait.

Jennifer Strait, 13, of San Marcos, daughter of last year's top male country vocalist, was dead at the scene of the wreck late Wednesday night in rural Central Texas.

A funeral will be held today at the First United Methodist Church in San Marcos, with burial in Pearsall, Strait's hometown.

Mike Cox, spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety in Austin, said the driver of the car, Gregory Wilson Allen, 18, of Staples, was charged with a Class A misdemeanor in connection with the girl's death.

''The trooper said contributing to the accident was excessive speed and the car did not negotiate the turn,'' Cox said.

Allen appeared Thursday before Hays County Justice of the Peace Macel Sullivan, the official who pronounced the girl dead at the scene.

Allen was released on a $2,000 personal recognizance bond and ordered to appear in court July 24.

Jennifer Strait was riding with two friends, William Allen McDonald, 16, and Joseph Wiley Robbins, 17, both of San Marcos, in a car driven by Allen when the wreck happened at 11:55 p.m. Wednesday, Cox said. He said the car turned sharply to a side road, skidded and flipped, landing on its top in a ditch.

Sullivan said none of the occupants of the car were wearing seat belts and Jennifer Strait was partially thrown out.

Robbins and McDonald were treated for minor injuries and released from a hospital, and Allen was unhurt.

A Jennifer Strait Memorial Fund was set up Thursday, but the family has not decided how the money will be used. The Straits also have a younger son.

George Strait, 34, was named top male vocalist of the year for 1985 by the Country Music Association and also won album of the year for ''Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind.''

Strait, the son of a South Texas teacher, has parlayed his brand of unabashed Western swing into a string of hit records, including ''Unwound,''''Fool Hearted Memory,''''If You're Thinking You Want a Stranger,'' and ''Amarillo By Morning.''

George Strait being very religious obviously did not wish to ruin the boy driving the car life, he knew nothing was going to their daughter back. The only lesson I would have hoped for since the boy Allen was not convicted that he had to endure what driving fast can cause which I thought he should have had to take a course on honoring speed limits and responsibility lies on drivers when they have other passengers in the vehicle in which they are driving. I do hope that he learned this lesson but the loss of a friend since he was not convicted and had to serve educating on driving more carefully.
I just heard about this recently knew George and Norma daughter died but not the details.

Curiosity killed the cat!

Those who would question the Strait family as to why they'd their 13y old to be in a car w/older teens. Those who've been there & done that should know teens will be teens. Whether given permission or not a lot of teens do opposite of what their told & will get in a car with an inexperienced driver.
Because a brain does not finish it's full learning capacity, such as reasoning until age 24. It may take some people longer to learn how to use critical thinking. Teens don't have the for thought to understand the full potential risk that accidents happen & bad thing can happen to good people. At some point ommon sense will tell us this but not everyone has a lick of common sense.

I was at a Strait concert in smaller central "the heart of Tx." after the loss of their child, he was unable to finish the show & walked off stage.
He'd appeared to be forgetful of the words & was boo'd.
It was suspected he was on some type of drug.
(?legal or illegal, I wouldn't know & not anyone's business) He was boo'd after he walked off stage & made it clear he would never come back to that particulate town, he's never returned.
People demanded refunds, they didn't get one.
I loved the concert.

I agree with Another lady's previous post that it's innapropriate to ask the Strait family or (Anyone) personal questions regarding the death of a family member. Whatever's made public take it & leave it at that. If the Strait family or any family freely opens up to provide additional information is up to them, not the curious public or the fans. Knowing private effects of Straits life doesn't make one a personal friend or #1 fan, it makes you noisy. Lastly, just because someone becomes a public figure they still feeling, have a right to their privacy, so don't over step your boundary's.
Put yourself in their shoes.

It was my birthday. She and I went to Owen Goodnight Jr. High together. She was sweet and kinda silly, in a good way. She looked so much like her mom, Norma, with George's eyes. The accident happened later on in the evening. The driver was Greg and Robbie was in the backseat. Jenifer(one N, not two) was in the front passenger seat and when the car turned out of the subdivision onto Hunter Rd, it hit gravel. It is correct that she was not wearing a seatbelt and that her window was down. It is also correct that they were leaving a party. Not a huge PARTY, but a friendly get together without drinking and drugs. We were, after all, still in Jr. High.
It was very sad, I was a tad older than her. My uncle was a band member at the time George and Norma were both really good people and well Jenifer was a sweetie. Reading your post I can tell you knew the family and I have some old band photos with her I'd like to share with you. Just hit me up (Kelley Osburn) on FB.

I would never let my daughter be out at midnight at 13 years old with older high school boys... just saying... other than that, this is tragic and my heart goes out to their family.

I am not trying to judge, but am surprised he would let his daughter, at only 13, be out with three older boys at midnight. Seems like maybe some info might be missing about that.

I can't help but wonder if her parents knew she was out that late and with three older boys when she was just 13. I always thought that something didn't sound right with that.
