It's so sad to see two articles about businesses closing in today's paper. In addition to trying to overcome the giant hurdle of the economic downturn, it feels like Park City has lost some of it's small-town feel.

In the past year four businesses within sight of mine have closed. People will come into my business and ask where they went, what happened?

Sometimes they seem shocked, disappointed, or even angry or abandoned. Occasionally I engage these people in conversation and find they haven't been to those now-shuttered businesses for 6 months, or longer.

I wonder why? Do they shop in Salt Lake? Online? Have they just curtailed their own spending due to economic worries?

For those of you who enjoy what's left of our small-town atmosphere and have the financial ability, spend some time in our local shops. Try to keep your money moving here in town when possible.

Let's hope we don't see too many more similar articles.

My town has put together a pretty impressive campaign to keep locals shopping at their local stores. I live in a pretty high density area, so people have choices outside of their home town. It may be less of an issue for PC, since there isn't a whole lot of choice unless you have to drive all the way into SLC. Nonetheless, I suggest that the local PC business people put together a "If you Love Park City, shop Park City" campaign with ads, posters, and some smart public relations/marketing strategies. Hey, it can't hurt!

To shop locally these days means buying over-priced condos and townhouses from Talisker (based in Toronto). Talisker is Park City, Park City is Talisker. Pose with your friendly local Lauren Hutton, and try to convince yourself that you have taste.

Sorry to see Orions go.

Brian, best wishes in the future. Thank you for the years of providing PC with a personal place to hang and purchase music.

I am saddened to read about Orion's closing. I loved to go in to browse. I always left with a CD that was unique - hard to find elsewhere. I will miss this store.

This is the sort of thing that happens when wally world, best buy and other big box stores come into an area. the local retailers are pretty much goners.

PC is a tourist town and the saying is everything is over priced and there's plenty of it.

PC has not only out priced it's work force for housing, it's also out priced it's local consumers. So most people are forced to go to wally world and leave the mom and pop shops wondering where they went.

One would think that after the local mom and pop shops start shutting down, they'd get a clue.

I've only been in Orion's a couple of times. I'm not that much of a music buyer, I might have 20 Cd's in my collection, but I do know a lot of people that did shop there and I hate to see any local merchant have to close up knowing that if wally world and best buy wasn't here, they'd still be open.

great music store. you could see this coming when they started to supplement by selling paraphernalia. Where will all the burners buy their bongs now?
