I had a different take. I saw two themes, the rejuvenation of Walter, and the deportation of Tarek. "The Visitor" spends lots of time getting us to feel for these two characters. As a result we are sympathetic toward the illegal in the detention center, about to be deported probably, who cries "But I didn't do anything wrong!".

The film skilfully brings us through this scene without our noticing the obvious, that he HAS done something wrong. He is present in the US illegally.

The file would have been far better if the political opinions had been presented with some subtlety.
