Before moving to California, one of the things I was most excited about experiencing was the Rafael Film Center. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. It is a beautiful venue and the level of films presented is unsurpassed. It not only provides an opportunity to be entertained, but also educated. My life was literally changed after the screening of the film "Thirst", by it's filmmakers. It told of the impending and often ignored crisis we face with the privatization of our water resources. Their question and answer period accompanying rhe film doubled the impact. I have been spreading the word regarding the abuse by corporations who purchase the resources of communities and transport their water around the world. Thank you Rafael.

The Rafael is the crown jewel of downtown San Rafael. Having grown up in San Rafael, I saw many movies there since the 60's.(Who can forget that mean old lady at the box office?) I like to attend a film there then go to one of the many nearby restaurants afterward. I've seen some amazing independent & documentary films at the Rafael. My favorites, though, have been restorations of Hollywood classics. Not being one of the stereotypical wealthy Marin yuppies, I have had to think twice before attending any movies lately. I've even had to let my RFC membership lapse. The last films I saw at the Rafael were "Man on Wire", the comedy-drama "How About You" and a presentation of the restored 1945 thriller, "Leave Her to Heaven." Attending a film at the Rafael Film Center is always a special event.
