1) While at SUN

i) Elvis on piano on "Trying to get to you".
ii) Elvis on guitar on all the rest of them.

2) While at RCA before his being drafted

i) Elvis on piano on the master to "Old shep"
ii) Elvis on bass on the "Baby, I don't care" master, adds his voice a day later.
iii) Elvis adds percussion on "Wear my ring around your neck", a week after recording the master.
iv) Elvis on guitar on all the rest of the sessions, including the Million Dollar Quartet.

3) In the US Army
i) Elvis on guitar and piano in numerous private recordings.

4) After his US Army return, and before the 68 Special

i) Elvis on piano, and singing, on one of the "After loving you" alternates.
ii) Elvis on guitar on the "Elvis is back", "Elvis for everyone" and "GI Blues" sessions. His playing leads the band in "Reconsider Baby".

The 68 Special and till his death

i) Elvis on guitar and electric guitar, most notably on "Trying to get to you", One Night" and Baby, what do you eant me to do", on all the sit down sessions
ii) Elvis clearly heard playing his electric Guitar on "Baby, what do you want me to do", as sang at one of two stand up sessions.
iii) Elvis on piano in "I miss you" and all the songs recorded at his Bel Air home, in 1973.
iv) Elvis on piano at the only live versions of "You'll never walk alone", and "Rags to Riches" and in least 8 live versions of "Unchained Melody".
v) Elvis on piano on at least 4 live versions of "Blueberry Hill".

I left at least one out, which I will post later, as it slipped out of my memory while I was typing this message.

On the elvis information network there is an interview with Elvis cousin Billy Smith and he said Elvis played bass on Blue eyes crying in the rain.He should know because he was close to Elvis. It,s kind of funny that some of Elvis most criticly acclaimed recordings - Sun-RCA 50s-early60s-68special feature him playing guitar yet its said he was,nt a good guitar player. In a band alot of the feeling of a song is led by the rythmn guitar and the singing.Johnny cash said in a biography I read about him he wondered why Elvis didn,t play guitar that much later on because when he was around him when they first started that he liked just hearing Elvis and his guitar.

This is my third post, I was hoping to get more discussion on this. Elvis before he became famous most likely just accompanied himself on guitar or piano. His guitar playing seems to be influenced by blues artist like Jimmy Reed.I haven,t read any where about Robert Johnson being an influence but he must of knew about him. Robert Johnson is famous guitar player/singer who was a big influence on Eric Clapton and other guitar players.Robert Johnson wrote Crossroads and there,s urban legend he made a deal with the Devil he also died on aug.16

Elvis played a lot of instruments

guitar and piano most famously

but there's photos of him playing drums and

a rare in army photo of him playing an accordian

the 77 CBS concert where he did unchained melody on piano was haunting

I just would like some feedback ,so I keep coming back to this ,forget about Michael Jackson. I watched a video on U TUBE , Elvis doing Bridge over Trouble Water with only piano ,not him playing piano , video from THATS THE WAY IT IS. It,s my favorite version

Just go to 7 minutes exactly into the clip below and then have the guts to swear to us, that you have seen anyone else, in the history of entertainment, try something as daring as Elvis does here and, what's even more striking, in front of 20,000 people as Elvis did in Chicago, on 2 May 1977.

Sven minutes into the clip.

Actually, that note is a seven second, uninterrupted A4 which, incredibly, still manages to land into a B4, the latter as he simultaneously delivers that incredible roll on his back, followed by an unusual "God Damm you!!!", a reference as to how he probably felt, then, about hid former wife Priscilla (LOL)

He didn't play bass on "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain" At least, it is not him listed in the session notes. Also, by that time in his life, he had many other options than to paly and instrument he had only a rudimentary knowledge of.

ELVIS played bass on Baby your so sqare because Bill black just put electric bass down disgusted because he was used to playing a standup bass .so Elvis picked it up and played the song.Elvis was always playing the bass at home in the 60,s according to jerry schiling. I read interview with billy smith Elvis cousin and he said at jungleroom session in76 for some reason Elvis wanted to play bass on Blue eyes crying in the rain. You can find the interview on Elvis information nrtwork.

Yes. This is a complete myth. He did not play bass or any of the instruments of any of the Graceland stuff.
