New China tariff list creates risk for US auto industry

There are 16 comments on the KBMT story from Sep 19, 2018, titled New China tariff list creates risk for US auto industry. In it, KBMT reports that:

New tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on auto parts from China will hit carmaker profits , cut sales and threaten to "start a downward cycle" in the critical industry, analysts unanimously agree. In addition, if you're in the market for a new car, you probably should head to a dealership soon, because prices will be going up.

Prices of just about everything will be going up sharply for the American middle class consumer, as Dirty Donald Trump cuts taxes for his rich pals and increases them on the middle class by wrapping them in the flag and calling them tariffs! He's shifting the tax burden off the rich and onto the middle class!

It's quite the con!

There are 30,000 parts in the average automobile and according to the article about 100 parts in the average car are made in China. So a 10% tax on those 100 out of 30,000 parts will drive up the cost of a new car and I will have to cut out one cup of Starbucks if I want to buy a new car. If of course the makers don't just source the parts here.
Talk about exploiting fear. Everybody run out and buy a car now before the price goes up a dollar. At the end of the model year of course. No need to discount the old models because the new ones will cost more thanks to Trump.

BTW I rarely drink Starbucks except when traveling and I have no choice. Very over priced and over rated.

Funny how the "progressives" are whining that the price of soda will go up due to tariffs on aluminum yet they want to tax soda to reduce consumption because it is "bad for us" which of course we are not able to recognize for ourselves.

Yes it is true that the Trump Cult Members will try to sell these new taxes on the American middle class as some sort of fabulous bonus! They can't stop lying! Just like Trump!

Obama destroyed what little was left of the U.S. Auto industry and all other manufacturing jobs. Trump is reversing that trend. China was never a friend to the U.S. or any other nation excluding Stalin's Communist Russia. Historically mass murder and rape have been the leading industry in Communist nations. No one murdered as efficiently and relentlessly than Mao and Stalin. The Left must be so proud of their history.

Your quote of 30,000 parts in the average automobile includes a count of every screw. https://www.japanesemotorworks.com/blog/... ?

The article listed examples like engines as a part and I'm sure engines are more than one part of that count. Your debate point is comparing screws to engines.

The article also goes on to state that China's tariffs may raise to 25% which would raise the price of an automobile by approximately $4.400. That's a significant chunk of change for Jane and Joe Middle Class, not an overpriced Starbucks coffee.

Yes the article did state that industry analysts claim that price on CERTAIN vehicles with a large numbers of Chinese parts COULD increase that much IF they were to face a %25 tariff on all of those parts. That of course is not what is proposed or what will happen but it does sound scary. Of course those autos that have few Chinese parts and those that reduce the number of Chinese parts they use will face small or no increases. So it is not like you HAVE to pay more for a new car. You can chose to pay more and have the money go towards our national debt or you can buy a cheaper car and support American workers. Isn't freedom of choice wonderful?

I have already purchased my brand new car, just 3 months ago, I drove my last brand new car for 15 years before I purchased this one. I plan to drive my brand new car for 20 years or more because I researched and bought smart. I made a smart choice, not a choice of where the parts were made or who endorsed it. I bought my car from a dealership in my city, keeping a salesman employed. All of the maintenance will be done by people in my city, keeping those workers employed.

Nice for you but that has nothing to do with the subject unless you bought the car now because you were worried about the tariffs increasing the price. Then the scare tactics from the Automobile Dealers Association worked and you are proving my point.
So if you pay $4,400.00 more for your car because it is made with mostly Chinese made parts and yo keep it for 20 years then scrap the car it will cost you an extra $220.00 a year to pay the tariffs (tax). If you are an average working American you will save 3 times that thanks to the Trump tax cut and you will see your income increase even more.In addition this is a tax you do not have to pay.

Yes, virtually every single thing sold at Walmart is made in China now, so the New Trump Tax on car parts is just the tip of the iceberg. Any gain from the tax cuts will soon be wiped out by the New Trump Taxes of 30% or more on at least half of US domestic consumption that is imported.

Remember, in spite of his rhetoric, Dirty Donald Trump's goal is to shift the tax burden from his rich golf buddies onto the American middle-class.
