I saw this show in previews in NYC just prior to its official opening. It was dreadful! The pacing was brutal, there was absolutely zero chemistry between the two romantic leads and there was really not one memorable moment on stage. The songs were bland and the choreography rather average. Some nice sets and lighting kept me from completely falling asleep, but it was a weak effort at best. I loved the movie version and perhaps it's the fact that Johnny Depp owned the role so completely made it very difficult for Snyder to follow. I think that the music from the movie was much more memorable than a single one from this new Broadway endeavor. The stars of the show turn out to be the goodie-goodie choir boy and Cry Baby's deranged stalker, who steal the mundane show with the number "Girl, Can I Kiss You ...?", which is sung in front of a wedding-clothier in which the mannequins are the male and female leads! Other than that, this one is just BLAND BLAND BLAND. The fact that it was nominated for Tonys is much more a reflection of the weak state of fresh and original musical theater in NYC than anything creative or entertaining that could be found buried in this waste of space!

I am thrilled for John Water's success. He is my idol in life as he is for many Baltimore natives. But I'm much more looking forward to his next scandalous film.
