If you not going to keep some basic constitutional rights and principles in everyday life what the frack is being defended.
The Patriot Act was named the Patriot Act so if you oppossed it you would be labeled unpatriotic. This was done to stifle opposition even if legal, logical or practical. Exploiting emotional times and instilling fear in harmless old ladies is what has helped get this intrusion or act passed. It's simply an ends justifies the means act.
It also solidifies the power base of the status quo but that's the problem, when the status changes or is simply different will those laws and acts change. I think not. Your "protection" perceived is power achieved.
