People, people, people this really exemplifies the fact people will jump on the band wagon of Diana bashing before garnering all the facts and research.
First, Florence was NEVER the lead singer in the Supremes. Berry was not looking for a soulful singers in the Supremes, he was searching for a commercial sound that had pop appeal. If he was looking for a soulful singer he would have signed Aretha Franklin who is from Detroit Motown area. Diana Ross was a diamond in the ruff, and 40+ years later she's still one of a kind and class act.

Flo did form the Primes, along with Mary. It was them who invited Diana to join.( in high school).
The Primes were the now Temptations. Florence did not form that group.

The real reason Jean Terrell and Birdsong finally called it quits was the poor management from Mary,s husband. Jean , Mary, and Cindy had tons of potential as a recording group.......but I guess Diana "slept" with whoever was in charge and killed it. I Love Jean Terrel and what she brought to the group.....her presence and her vocal style were right with the times as black music hit a more "funked out" pace. I heard Diana would stalk them to their concerts and let the air out of the limos tires just so they would be late.........dammed her !!!
And you that Bull****, do your research before listening to what someone else says. Remember hearsay is not admissable in court. You should live by that rule.

THIS IS A FLAT LIE! I don't care if you like Diana Ross. I don't care if you don't like Florance Ballard. BUT I WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO LIE ON HER! She WAS the founder as well as the LEADER of the Primettes / Supremes!! WHY DON'T PEOPLE JUST MAN UP / WOMAN UP AND ADMIT THAT?
Accept and believe. Fkorence was never the lead vocalist in the Supremes. Florence Ballard sister Maxine Ballard Jenkins just released her book and states that Diana was always the lead singer.
This is a brief extraction from Maxine Ballard's book entitled "The True Story of Florence (Blondie) Ballard."

One myth that "Dreamgirls" has given new legs is that Ballard was pushed out as original lead singer of the Supremes in favor of Diana's "more commercial" voice.

"Florence formed the group, but Diane was the lead singer of the Primettes," Jenkins says. "This is something nobody knows: When Milton Jenkins put them all together and they rehearsed, Diane used to sing out of her nose. He used to really criticize her; he didn't realize that was really an asset. He was getting after her, saying,'Look Diane, I want you to sing from here (she taps her chest).'"

Contrary to common belief, Jenkins says after Ballard was forced out of the Supremes and fell on hard times back in Detroit, Ross helped her over the years.

"Florence from her own lips told me that she found out that Diane sent her a check to help pay her house note," Jenkins says. "I asked her what happened to it, and Florence said 'I never got it.' "

The check from Ross was intercepted. Jenkins says she found out by whom, but won't disclose that. She says Ross also sent checks every year to Ballard's three daughters, after her death.

<quoted text>Diana Ross might have had what Berry Gordy was looking for in appearance but so did Mary Wilson who had a good voice and was better looking. Diana was only pushed by Berry Gordy because of the love interest which he had and was proved when she got pregnant and they were married. She would not be the diva in song and movies if it were not for being pushed by Berry who had the connections. If Mary Wilson was pushed in the same way she would be as big a hit.
I really hate when people get into this forum and start making statements that are far from the truth. Berry Gordy and Diana Ross was NEVER married. Do your research before posting something that you conjured up. Berry pushed Diana yes because her voice sold records. Both Mary and Florence did leads songs early on but their voices on lead wasn't believable and did not have the it factor.
Just because you have a strong voice doesn't guarantee you success in the recoring industry. Face it, Diana was a diamond in the rough, and she continues to shine brighter than ever.

Why do you resort to name calling and making insulting comments on my behalf because this text came from a region of the US that you think exeplifies those characteristics. I'm not about to trade insults with you. You are not worthy.

Diana Ross did not take Florence's dream. First, one must have a dream, secondly, Florence had no drive or work ethic. Thirdly, she made an attempt at a solo career, ABC could not market her thinking she could the Diana for them (ABC Records). Everybody need to stop blaming Diana Ross for the other Supremes failures. They ought to be thanking Diana for the success that they garnered. They were all getting equal pay for Diana hard work and often times recording solo on songs that they(Mary, Cindy) did not sing on.

OH! Mary says it herself that she gets almost a milion in royalties for "Someday We'll Be Together," and "Love Child." Mary and Cindy did not record on these hits. They continue to get paid...ooops, Cindy Birdsong signed all of her royalties away so she gets zippo...dumb!

Rita,

Your being on this site implies to everyone that you tend to dislike and spread lies and speak untruthfulness about Diana Ross. Which makes me wonder how can one be so informed about Diana Ross and speak with such hate. You are very inarticulate, have no commom sense, and lack education. Please do your research before responding, quit plagiarizing information that you've read and seek the truth. You'll be amazed!

No need for you to buy a dictionary if you paid attention in grade school. Maybe you was sitting in the back of the class passing notes and talking about people behind their backs rather than getting your lesson so now you don't need a dictionary to understand these "postestes." You're pathetic! I guess a learned behaviorial habit is hard to break, however, with a litle self love, self esteem, and self worth anything can happen...in your case.

I do agree Diana Ross Was the Lead Singer, But Do not Down Florence, Please respect her spirit. Florence was a great singer as well, I think Florence's husband was very jealous of her, and did not want to see her make it on her own because it seemed she was independent, he seemed intimidated by that. I think Diana really loved Florence, and no one knows what really went on in the supremes but THE SUPREMES.
