Good grief. The plot, acting, and the direction of THE RIDDLE are a masterclass in 'how not to make a film'. Jones utterly fails to convince as a hardman with a sensitive / intelligent side, and lacks even a spark of chemistry with his leading lady. It all serves to make Derek Jacobi look like a ridiculous ham actor in comparison. And the rest of the cast are either washed-up has-beens or simply out of their depth acting at all. The plot is contrived, apallingly paced, and the Dickens 'flashbacks' are simply inane. How does anyone gets the funds to make a film like this? No wonder they gave it away in a newspaper...

Good grief is correct! What a nonsense review. Bad hair day, Timster?

The Riddle is a great little movie. Vinnie Jones and Julie Cox have plenty of chemistry, as do Jones and Jacobi. The plot weaves together fragments of Dickens actual life, the story in an undiscovered manuscript and a contemporary tale of murder and corruption in Docklands.

Interestingly, there is always a lot of flak when something new is tried - having a release through a different channel (a Sunday national)is a ground breaking idea and will no doubt generate a lot of howls of outrage!

Obdviously Jane Goodman here was involved in making the film hence the good review, as most people would have guessed by the fact this is given away as a free movie, and not being released on proper DVD or at the cinema, this is not a good film. Timster pretty much somes it up, I wouldn't say it was any of the actors fault, what I would say though is whoever edited this film should be shot, scenes are poorly put together, the music doesn't go with the film, sound quality is poor, the list goes on. The plot is stupid, its best to describe it as a very poor version of the da vinci code (and that wasn't exactly a 5 star film).
To be fair there have been many films released at cinema that are way worse than this and I thought Derek Jacobi was OK, but I still couldn't recommend it, I was unable to watch it util the end having lost interest after 5 minutes. Turned TV off just after the half hour mark.
Releasing it with a paper is far from a ground breaking idea as well, I mean the poor people watch this film have had to buy the daily mail as well.
