Like most people, his 1st instinct was to go the opposite way from the gunfire, as quickly as possible.

Seems even those who get paid to do it aren’t so thrilled by the prospect of actually getting shot.

I am well aware that the police can’t protect you or me. I am also aware they are undermanned. In my town we are lucky if more than one officer is on patrol at any given time. I am a sheep dog and if you are aware of that story then you know how I feel about firearms. I was replying to a poster that said he would self-disarm.

True, but if that isn't something you're willing to do then perhaps a different career choice should have been made.

If you're afraid of fire, being a fireman probably isn't the best option.

COPs are overr dognuted, NOT undermanned.

The security guard wasn't the only one who cowered outside the school until the shooting stopped. Did ya see all the SWAT members wait outside?

IMHO more COPs in schools is not an answer. Read the following:

Seems to me everyone going into a school must be scanned for weapons just like airline passengers are scanned. Keep weapons out of schools!!

However criminals WILL find weapons no matter what is kept out of schools. They use fists and feet to injure others in school. Maybe we need to keep criminals OUT OF SCHOOL!!!!

He wasn’t a “security guard”.

Officer Scot Peterson, 54, resigned Thursday from Broward County Sheriff’s Office where he served for 33 years.

Peterson had been the resource officer at Douglas High School since 2009 and made a base annual salary of $75,673.72 as of 2016, according to sheriff’s office records cited by the Sun-Sentinel newspaper.

That base salary, however, doesn’t include longevity and first-responder bonuses that probably brought Peterson’s non-overtime pay closer to $80,000, according to (Union head) Bell.

Peterson’s pension will be 75 percent of the average of his top five earning years while on the job, the union head said.

We need school choice and get American kids out of these sociopath academies. We need a thousand educational experiments going on, not the monolithic Prussian Educational Caste system we have.

He simply wasn’t mentally or physically prepared for a combat situation, but very few people are.

He did at least have the wherewithal to call the situation into dispatch, but paying a guy $75K/yr to call 911seems a little excessive.

If we’re going to install guards at schools, there needs to at -least- one for each and every entrance to the building, plus perimeter guards and/or enclosed & monitored fence line.

They’ll need to be in a combat-ready mentality at all times, a high rotation between Afghanistan and the public schools would be a logical solution for that.

A small problem is that for 20 troops per school (average) we’ll need an active force of some 5.6 Million combat ready units.

This would l cost at least $1Million/yr per school, totaling $284 Billion to cover just the public schools. This money could be appropriated from the budgets of both the DHS and the DoD.

If necessary, bake sales could be used to generate supplemental funds

Sheriff and his Department along with States Atty did nothing to stop Perp Cruz in 39 contacts. FBI did nothing and now this is the fault of one Deputy with a 40 cal. glock 22 not taking on a AK47. Sounds reasonable to most stupid Americans. That is why you make such good targets.

He probably heard the frequency of the firing and thought he was out gunned.

It appears he was waiting for backup.

It is a shame. We will never know if he could have stopped this tragedy.

His retirement will be fraught with guilt. I wouldn’t want trade places with him.

Given that, if teachers are going to be on the front lines, how will the public treat them if they fail and survive a shooting?

We all admire and set folks up to hero status when they die.

But the chances that an armed teacher actually being in the right place at the right time is slim.

They may have to make split second decisions that could fail or make the situation worse.

Will they have a Good Samaritan law protecting them?

What about liability insurance?

Legal representation costs?

This is not going to be a simple solution.
