James J. Kilpatrick's in-your-face, conservative bickering with liberal commentator Shana Alexander three decades ago was famously parodied - then copied for years to come.

What a heartbreaking loss.
The Writer's Art was, hands down, my favorite feature. To this day, I treasure a letter he sent me in reply to a query I made as a teenager.

I'm too young to have 'seen' him as a commentator, so I never made the connection to SNL. To learn of this, in this way, is bittersweet- I'd have to loved to have asked him what he thought of wielding such cultural influence, as I'm sure his reply would have been priceless.

I wonder how many of us were made better writers from his gentle and humorous guidance. My guess is, the answer is 'countless'.

Rest In peace, Dear Mr. K-you are already missed by many.
