"On Nov. 5, 1972, a resident discovered the body of a young man lying in a ravine in the 2900 block of Athel Drive of Hacienda Heights at 9:53 a.m. A neighbor heard gunshots and screams nearly eight hours earlier.

On Sept. 5, 1973, less than a year after John Doe was found, the decomposing remains of a teenage girl wearing peace symbol earrings was discovered in a shallow grave near a fire road east of Skyline Drive in La Habra Heights. Someone shot her in the head. Like John Doe, she remains unidentified and her murder unsolved..."

Hmmm, they were both wearing that disgusting peace symbol thing. Probably a couple of anti-American hippie peaceniks. I wonder if they ever burned the flag or sang "Happy Birthday" to Ho Chi Minh?

Obviously the world didn't lose much.

If I was to speculate... based on the apparel described and era in which this took place the subsequent lifestyle stood a good chance to involve drugs. My guess is this was somehow drug related. But who knows, not much they can do with the case until they identify the guy. And again, given the era, there is the the probability that this guy was from out of state... given that no loved ones have come forth to identify him. Sad. Especially so young. They mention the girl, and from what I remember of that article there are a few similarities, but they'd be way to vague to make a connection. I wonder if the calibur bullets were the same? That would make the chances of a connection more likely. Anyway, I hope this turns out like some of the past cold case articles on this website where the info led to leads and a subsequent arrest.. but given the age of this one, I doubt it.

No, that was pretty much the style back then, to wear the peace signs, frayed vests, and denim. It didn't mean that a person did drugs or anything. It's too bad though, no one claimed these young people - maybe they no longer had living family. These cold cases are fascinating. And who knows, maybe science will give up more clues.

Call me morbid and call me pale, but I have become mildly obsessed with these local murders. I can only imagine what that girl felt right before the bullet ended her for eternity. I can only imagine how piercing and longing those screams were coming from this man that were heard by that neighbor. Somewhere out there is somebody that never knew what happened to their loved ones. I can imagine this crime will never be solved, it has been so long and it deeply saddens me to hear these very, very, very tragic and cold stories. I hope some day it is revealed who killed these people. What scares me the most is the fact I have been right near where the body of that Jane Doe was found, at the top of the Skyline trail head in La Habra Heights. I looked on Google maps where they found this man in that shallow grave and it looks like a place where one might dump a body. How tragic. I am positive there is a common denominator in these two murders, there were many extremist groups in the 70's, especially those against hippies. A quarrel probably broke out and it, tragically, ended.
