Joe sang harmony and played guitar with Conway in the early years. When and how did he die? How old was he and was he still with the Twitty Birds at that time?

Thanks

I am sure he was still playing in Conway's band when he passed, it was due to a motorcycle accident, if I remember correctly..Big Joe's death really hit Conway hard.

Big Joe was about 40 years old when he died.He died in 1976. He was born in Arkansas and is buried in Newport, Arkansas. My mother and joe were first cousins and were around the same age.Joe was born in january and my Mom was born in April either the same year or the following year. The year my mom was born was 1936.Joe was a very talented person and wasstill playing with Conway.

Hi Ina, I lost touch with you. Please contact me at the same address, as I have some Lewis family photos that were in Mama's pictures, I want to give you. I remember Mama talking about John's son, Joe, being a musician and singer, but I never met him.

I was listening to WJJD radio in Chicago in 1976 to the Mark Edwards show. After a commercial break, Mark announced that he had received news of Big Joe E. Lewis's death from Nashville. He reported that Joe and his girlfriend were killed in an auto accident just outside Nashville. He didn't have any details of how it happened, other than Joe was driving a new 1976 Corvette if I remember correctly. If anyone would have anymore details of the accident, I would appreciate it. I got to meet him when the Conway Twitty Show played Arie Crown Theatre in Chicago in 1975.

I worked for Loretta Lynn when she was touring with Conway. We were at Bradley's barn for Conway and Loretta to record when a phone call told us to come to the hospital. When we arrived we found out that Big Joe was already gone. His girlfriend had given hi a new corvette and they had a wreck in an area under construction. The corvette t-top flipped and the girlfriend fell out but it landed on top of Joe and drug him to his death. Devastation doesn't begin to describe what we all felt that night!

My Momma ran a very famous and successful Country Club in Aurora, Colorado in the late 60's and early 70's. The name of the Club was "The 4 Seasons". This was a huge place and Loretta mentions it in her book ,Coal Miners Daughter. Many big name Country Stars played it. Joe said he looked forward to coming to town and him and my Mom and were very good friends. When they first met it was just Pork Chop, Joe and Conway. Then John came on the Steel. Momma would always laugh and tell the story about how Joe would hold his arm out level and she could stand beneath it.My Momma weighed 95 lbs and was 5'2", her nickname was little bit. She always said Joe was a true southern gentleman. Everytime they were in town He made time time to see my Momma. She hadn't seen him in a few years when she heard the news of Joe's death. Ironically she had married and was living in Witter Arkansas in 1976 when he passed. To his family I send my warmest regards and the knowledge that he was a respectful, loving southern gentleman, who treated my Momma, his friend, like a lady ALWAYS! God bless you all!

I went to Judson School, Paradise Valley, AZ with Mike and Jeff Lewis in 1976 (Joe's sons). Good friends at the time, but lost contact. I'd love to get back in touch.

This is Joe's girlfriend when he was in the car accident on Smith Springs road in Priest lake in Nashville. It was not his girlfriend in the car with him at the time . It was my friend and she nor did I die! She was in the hospital for about a week or so. My car which was what he was driving was a red corvette that I gave to him. We were together for a year before the accident. I have many memories of Joe and Conway and the band. We all hung out and were good friends. I still love and miss him very much. His memories will never die! He did buy a motorcycle and a boat the day before he died but the motorcycle did not kill him. He was in th corvette. I miss him and always will!! LOVE C.B
