General Warns of Long Insurgency

There are 16 comments on the The Associated Press story from Jun 18, 2007, titled General Warns of Long Insurgency . In it, The Associated Press reports that:

“The Iraqis will have to step up, not only on the political side, but on the military side to a greater extent. We're not there forever.”

Stabilizing Iraq could take as long as a decade, says the U.S. commander in Baghdad.

'In fact, typically, I think historically, counterinsurgency operations have gone at least nine or 10 years,' Gen. David Petraeus said Sunday. 'The question is, of course, at what level.'

His comments came as Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice prepared to meet with Iraqi foreign minister Hoshyar Zebari on Monday in Washington.

Petraeus said insurgents pushing back on newly aggressive coalition military forces have led to continued violence in Iraq, describing an ebb-and-flow of sectarian murders in Baghdad. Read more

It looks like "job security" to me. Keep us in an ongoing war and increase the military budget that is already astronomical. What has happened to America? Our country has become far too focused on everything military. Our children will be goose-stepping in grade school before long.

Stabilizing Iraq could take as long as a decade? Could be but we won't be there that long. American people won't stand for it.

Petraeus,"I think historically cointerinsurgency operations have gone nine or ten years." If that is true, then why should the American people wait until September 07 for his report? How many soldiers will be maimed and killed during that period? Who is going to pay for the cost of a long term operation? Recall we were told, Iraqui oil would defray the costs of war. If those who watched 60 Minutes,6/17/07,then you learned that 800 million dollars were stolen by a corrupt iterim Iraqui government with our administration complicit by its silence. Should we continue to expend lives and treasure for such a country?

Put guys like this on the ground in Iraq with no air conditioned tents/buildings and make him live with his troops and he'll be finding out how to shorten the insurgency instead of taking photo ops while sipping coffee.

Petraeus,"I think historically cointerinsurgency operations have gone nine or ten years." let's see the vietnamese were fighting the dutch and french since 1933, until we stepped in and they finally won. This guy needs a better education on middle east politics. The arabs have been fighting colonialism since Napolean for god sake. And counterinsurgency operations in the region have been going on a hell of alot long than that. Ask the crusaders. Get our boys out of there and let the people of the region sort it out amongst themselves. We obviously don't have the leadership necessary or the public support, or the funds, or the cannon fodder to continue this mess. Thanks George - no wonder this guy is you ideal pick. He had to be incompetent to serve your plans.

that sounds like giving the insurgents the wrong signal as bush always says when the opposing party makes a statement about iraq. itll embolden the enemy. gezz why would the insurgents ever care to listen about what anyone says?

Warns my as$! All this was told to the Bush regime in October 01 when he began talking about invading Iraq. Nothing that is happening with our involvement with Iraq was a mystery and hard to foresee. Bush and Cheny just ignored what they were told because they wanted the oil.

We could stay in Iraq till the cows come home and still we shall not prevail. We will be surrounded by mercenaries from around the world until we are all dead there or worse.

We have been had. Year after year the Bush Gang has told their lies over and over. And our Congress let them get away with it-you know, the Congress from which all these presidential candidates come from-what a sad-sack group. And when the Bush Gang leaves, free of any consequences whatsoever, they will be laughing as they head out to spend the loot, telling us how wonderful they are.

The more munitions being fired everyday will increase the profits of the shareholders of these munitions manufacturers. I wonder how many of the republican government hold shares?

Blair followed the U.S.A into Iraq for the good of humanity not for grand theft oil.

If he did, he should say so and stop taking up for Bush.
