Should You Come Out to Your Parents?

Now more than ever, gays and lesbians are coming out to their parents-and they're doing it when they're quite young.

Most of what the article states seems like common sense, though young people may not recognize it as such.

I have never understood people who have the callousness and gall to reject children who have not done anything harmful. Years ago, my ancestors would have rent their clothing and mourned the loss of a child if the child married a "goy." They were a-holes back then ( yes, I am talking about my own ancestors!) and people who reject their gay children are a-holes nowadays.

Parents (and that still largely means "straight people") still often do not have the brains to realize that for biological, genetic and environmental reasons as well as simple chaos theory, their children are not going to necessarily follow the same path they did. Frankly, I think a good understanding of this fact should be required before anyone is allowed to raise children.

There's a commonly held narcissistic misperception among parents who feel their children have "turned gay" as a revenge upon the parents.

This paranoia says more about the parents than their children.

I also think there are far too many parents who regard their children as their proxies for do-overs of whatever went wrong in their own lives. Their children represent a new opportunity to continue the parents' personal battles, so the children will succeed where their parents have failed. That means the parents eventually succeed, albeit indirectly.

And God help the child who doesn't measure up, or otherwise wants to get out from under, their parents' plans.

Reading this article brought back some memories. My parents are hardcore catholic and there was no way I was going to come out to them while living in their home. I moved out at the age of 16 and to this day do not have a relationship with my parents.

I hope a lot of young gay and lesbian people are reading this because I believe it has some good info. Its just disgusting that some children cannot come out to their parents as gay/lesbian because the threat of being hated and or kicked out of the home. I can't think of any thing my baby girls could do to make me hate them or even think less of them.

They are part of me but yet individuals who must be like themselves not me. I'm lesbian and I do not hate them because they are heterosexual.

And where do you get your information? Did someone tell you that this is true? Did this HAPPEN to you? Because it didn't happen to me. Are you a psychologist or some kind of cultural sociologist? What kind of research have you conducted on this subject? Have you spent a lot of time interviewing gay men and women about the details of their lives? Is there some data you can present? Have you been peer reviewed or published anywhere? Is there ANY reason ANYONE should believe you have ANY correct information, since your claims are in direct opposition to the ENTIRE BODY of medical and scientific knowledge?

Even the leaders of Exodus, a group opposes the rights, and very EXISTENCE of gay people, have recently been publicized saying that they cannot change their own orientation. They ADMIT they cannot "choose". Why can't any of you haters AGREE with one another? How is anyone supposed to accept any of your claims if you all claim different things?

You should look into what makes you so crazy about this subject. If someone hurt you, you should save your hatred for THAT person, rather than slandering millions of people. If the statute of limitations prevents that person from meeting justice, then you should find SOME healthy way to vent your pain, so you can at least move on. I recommend finding a good therapist.

Like the article as said, the only CHOICE in the matter is to "come out." Its true more and more kids are coming out a lot earlier than in the past. You are like my older brother. He thought that there were more and more gay people, but I told him it isn't the case. There were always gay people out there, it wasn't as safe as it is today to come out in this day and age. Of course bigots like yourself are a great example of the dark ages.
The weird thing about your logic is totally warped and can be lead to justify harm onto queer people. The only thing that is filthy is your view on abortions. Gasp, they should have aborted you.
