Of course it's different from a no-smoking policy on public school grounds! They're forcing hospital patients and visitors to stop smoking in what is most often a highly stressful situation. All this accomplishes is to cause more stress--not to mention that smokers will be less inclined to seek treatment they need.

There are perfectly reasonable ways to provide smokers with a place to smoke. This policy lacks compassion. Not a desirable trait in a hospital, is it?

All the good (old) surgeons who smoke must have finally retired.

Tobacco is subsidized by the government and is legal.Yet we have all of these do gooders banning smoking in cities, beaches etc.As a smoker I do not smoke anywere but my car and outside my home but I am sick and tired of one sgement of society being the health police. The surgeons will be the ones taking longer smoke breaks as they will ahve to go farther away from the building in roder to smoke.Surgeons, doctors and nurses are the heaviest smokers.None of the smokers in our family have succumbed from smoking and are all well into their 80's.

Here in Oregon (we've been here 5 years now) it's always been a smoke free campus at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Corvallis. Which is great! Sets the best example ever! It should be that way at every hospital in the country!

I am in agreement with this decision. Many cigarette smokers push the envelope deliberately. If no smoking is allowed in a building, they will get as close to the entrance as possible so the smoke drifts inside. A lot of cigarette smoking is really aggression directed at other people. It does not belong anywhere near a hospital.

I love articles like this...which only state one side of the story. Not once do you find a single comment stating how this decision is anything but wonderful. Even the current smokers love it! Gosh, had they done this earlier maybe everyone would quit smoking and we'd all stand hand-in-hand and teach the world to sing! At least have ONE quote from someone who thinks they should be allowed to smoke on their own break time (as 99% of them do). I work at a hospital and they do not allow us to leave the campus during work hours. So, in essence, your banning amokers from smoking, yet, amazingly, they are all REALLY excited about it!

After they ban smoking everywhere, smokers will have no choice but to light up when they feel like it. It's against the law but so is child and spousal abuse, texting and cell phone use while driving, running red lights, etc. Everyone feels entitled these days to step into each others space.

I had a woman today who felt that my lane on Huntington Blvd. was the better lane for her to be eating her yogurt parfait. How she missed the big red truck, I don't know!

This is why all hospitals should carry those Crown7 electric cigarettes. They only emit water vapor and still allow people to get their fix!!! My dad was in the hospital and he is a 2 pack a day smoker and I purchased a kit for him and he has been satisfied so far and says he wants to completely switch to these.

I tend to agree with you. We know we are dealing with nicotine addicts, so why add to their stress when it's not really needed?
