Let us not go without mentioning those other stalwart wastes of celluloid namely Tommy, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Mr. Mike's Mondo Video (Laser Bra 2000 and swimming cats. Lord help us all).

Wow! Someone else has seen Mr. Mikes Mondo Video. Strangest film I ever saw. Would like to see it again just to make sure it was the nightmare I remember it was back in '79. whew!

ABBA's type of Euro-pop died in the US in the '70s.
There are certain acts and art forms that do no cross the Atlantic well and ABBA is one of them. They are not nor ever were nearly as popular in America than they were Europe wide.
Their kitsch fluff was nothing we Yanks could swallow and their stage play here in NYC is attended by Euro-tourists. Kind of like when Johnny Halliday played Vegas.
You knew this film was going to be silly from the start.

If I wanted to see a sl ut that slept around so much that she only has a vague idea who knocked her up, I would watch Maury. Much funnier, much more entertaining.

Maybe this film has issues as many late 70searly 80s musicals did, but they are campy fun now (and as a kid I watched Sgt. Pepper many times because of a crush on... and Xanadu had roller skating!)-- but for campy, total weirdness rent Sextette, Mae West's last film where she plays a sexy newlywed at 90 ... and Timothy Dalton sings in that one with her!********* Just do not have these ultra high expectations of perfection when you see Mama Mia!-- it is supposed to be fun & light, and theatres have a/c!

There's no law that states that everyone in the entire world has to like Abba. People have different tastes and that's okay. Plain and simple: if you like Abba, great. If you don't, fine. If you take everything newsday says to heart, then you need to get a clue.

But it's kind of sad to do it out of refex. I never said that U.S. taste was superior. I said that ABBA was not U.S. taste. You want to mention bad American entertainment, that's fine. Consider it time well spent, Sheila.

Scary thought when you think you were the only one who would ever admit to seeing it, right? But now u have me wanting to see it again. I wonder if it is on dvd? Maybe even blu-ray (perish the thought).

I'm very protective of Abba they are fantastic not many people could write songs in a different language that wasn't their own.
