The media labels everything and everyone. The idea is to sell their product and labeling makes it easier to sell. Now, it is not any different than "life coaches" trying to sell themselves. They are people who do not have the wherewithal to become licensed therapists, but like to stick there noses into everyone's business...for a fee, of course. Simply put, mental snake oil salesmen.I'm not a therapist but rather a life coach. My understanding of my role is not to diagnose or treat people who need therapy but rather suggest they go to a therapist for help. How presumptuous of the press to label public figures with diagnoses. It sells though. And maybe, if any of it is true about any of these public figures, maybe it's a wakeup call for them.
Thanks for educating the public.
Identifying real narcissists is no easy task

The Narcissistic Personality Inventory is a faulty test at best. Many people think that it measures healthy self-esteem rather than core narcissitic traits. I also wonder why Ames only uses 16 of the 40 questions typically used.

Maia, Are you a Life First Base Coach or a Life Third Base Coach? And is your diploma from Walmart or Target?

I had a girlfriend who I thought had NPD, one of the scariest people I've known. Everything was about her. If she screwed you over she'd never apologize it was always someone else's fault, but if something random and bad happened to you she'd blame herself and go on and on - because everything had to be about her. The most insecure person ever, and at the same time most conceited and treated everyone like crap. Absolute nutcase.
Not to mention the constant threats of stabbing me.

We have had the bad luck to live next to a neighbor that is much like your girlfriend, Chrisb.
He has made the entire neighborhood miserable because he does whatever he wants and no one should have anything bad to say about it. If you mention anything to him: you are evil and he is the persecuted one ...
No remorse for what he does to others. He justifies it because he is "persecuted" in his flawed reality.
He is completely self centered with absolutely NO sense of humor unless it is at another's expense. Has no reason for interacting with other people except when he needs something from them, then he turns on the phoniness/charm like you can't believe.
I think "sociopath" is a related personality disorder"... Narcissist is a very serious personality disorder that seems to affect the people interacting with the N much moreso than the actual N himself. They go through life thinking they are the cat's meow don't they... and they get worse as they get older.
We ALL know one, think about it.

I find that at this time the top of the list should not have contained the juvenile Spears but the adult Barak Obama. There is no more blantant example in the last 6 months plus as the 'presumptive" nominee who is performing as tho he were the President. Maybe he was not on the list because the column is running in the Chicago paper. So as they say 'consider the source' when getting your information. If lack of empathy is a characteristic of a narcissistic person, then Hillary Clinton should not be on that list. Just ask her 18 million supporters.
