I am a divorce mediator in Melville and am a Nassau County Family Court appointed Divorce Mediator. I was very interested in your article, but found it disappointing that certain private mediators were not contacted for this article. I am also a Collaborative Attorney and mediator on Long Island. I think there should have been a reference to the fact that there are alternatives for divorcing and separating couples. A very amicable and drastically less expensive way. I have litigated divorces in Court, and have been mediating also for the last 20 years. I would think an article talking about the benefits of having a trained mediator helping the couples would be very beneficial to your constituency. The benefits to the children themselves is unsurpassed. Please visit Divorce Mediation & Family Services of New York, LTD.( ) a non-profit organization dedicated to helping couples through this very difficult time.

You people in the press never got right the entire time. The implication that this had anything to with "rage" was insulting to the intelligence of men and women everywhere. It was Cook and his horrific decisions that created this tragedy. She bravely took on on a broken system for reasons that no one knows and hopefully no one ever will. It is very sad that we have become so care free about the pain of others.

Mediators do not protect people's rights like lawyers do in a divorce, was my personal divorce experience, as a mom of 3. Ordering parties to mediate sounds like a violation of their right to choose. Surely a party is entitled to LEGAL representation of his or her choice where his/her rights are involved. Our mediation was charged with taking indecent pictures of clients' kids when he asked for alone time with them (We heard it on the radio!). Fortunately he had not seen our kids alone. Even a mediator who was a lawyer but not practicing as an attorney, as we had, was not as up on the law as he should have been. I am now an attorney, so I know. And after you pay the mediator, you still have to pay a lawyer to draw up your agreement, and that cost twice as much as the mediator did.
