It is very rare that I feel compelled to post my comments up on a review, but Mike Sragow's review of 'Science of Sleep' is one of the most ill-conceived and poorly executed attempts at criticism I have ever had the misfortune to read. Having studied English Literature and Critical Theory I have had to put up with many self-aggrandizing and malliloquent guff but this review takes the biscuit. For Sragow to wantonly criticise the 'knowingness' of Gondry's work it is quite remarkable then to begin a sentence with 'Of course' and then pontificate on what the dream-sequences are attempting to achieve - surely the irony, and ignorance, of such an ill-founded and misguided attempt at authoratitive speech is painfully obvious. The cheap tabloid style of the writing really doesn't help to flesh out the paper-thin and pseudo-intellectual arguments that are stacked against the film. I am also inclined to agree with some criticisms of the film - i do not think it is a flawless piece of work, or even one of the better films of the year. However, i feel the smugness in Sragow's attempted deconstruction of the film, the pig-headed certainty he ascribes to the director's motives leave me feeling almost naseous. I do feel that I have been 'polite' as stipulated in the ToS but would not be surprised if my post is removed as i have expressed strong disagreement with the erstwhile reviewer. Nor is this post 'inappropriate' and, as such, i feel that it deserves to be seen, read and merits a reply from Mr Sragow. Yours Sincerely, Jack
