btw i also found this comment on the internet ( http://www.warr.org/santana.html )
"Carlos Santana & Buddy Miles! Live!(Santana & Miles: 1972)
In a volcano crater, no less. In all the mythologizing about the Tumultuous Sixties, it's been largely forgotten that LSD consumption resulted in a lot more unlistenable noise than innovative brilliance, and the proof is right here on this disc. The band lurches from one disorganized jam to another, occasionally finding a recognizable tune (including one hit by each bandleader, "Evil Ways" and "Them Changes") but more often spewing acid-rock clich├ęs. The most extreme example is the 25-minute "piece" that consumes the entire second side of the LP, "Free Form Funkafide Filth," which relies so heavily on lame-brained pentatonic riffs, distorted wah-wah and indulgent soloing that it's hard to sit through. Santana is brilliant enough to rise above all this sludge, but he doesn't do it here - his playing is so far below his usual level I'm shocked he agreed to the record's release. If you're still reading, there are apparently two drummers, Miles and Family Stone alumnus Gregg Errico, two guitarists (Santana and Schon) and a bass player, plus a horn section - the tenor player amusingly incorporates a number of Coltrane mannerisms into his solos, but without any of the musical invention.(DBW)"
This is incredible.... I think that this LP is one of the best LP's carlos ever made, the psychedellic music is mind blowing and this concert is even way better then his woodstock performance.

Listen carefully to the applause on this album - especially the whistling. It is so obviously a loop. I don't think this album was recorded 'live' at all except in the sense of being a 'live' studio jam. CS/BM may have played in Hawaii but I doubt if this is a recording of it. Just another Columbia cash-in on the Abraxas success if you ask me.

this album is not live as stated with interview with neal schon, who played 90%of all leads in recording, they tried to do it live but since a few of the members were on acid trips the original live recording was found un acceptable by columbia, santana and miles then had to re record live in studio with canned applause with lots of echo, the second side is a mess, but the first side has some great takes with i think some of neals best soloing and buddys incredable screaming vocals!definitely worth having just for the 1st good side

not live!the original live recording was rejected by colombia, miles and santana had to re record with canned echo applause in studio, some were talking too much acid and carlos was very depressed during this time due to original line up disbanding, neal plays about 95% of all solos, hes great on it!second side is a mess

As noted above the concert was the Crater Celebration January 1 1972. Bob Peyton and I were doing the secuirty piece for the festival which was put together by Tom Moffat at KPOI FM with Herb Brentlinger and Ken Rosene running the overall production.
The live concert recording had some problems, we were using fm radios for security and our transmissions bled into the sound track which needed a lot of edit work.
It was quite a show that hot afternoon

I was there, the tickets were 20.00 per person,so me and some friends, high on acid decided to hike up the east side of Leahi, aka Diamond head, and down into the crater itself. What we didn't know was that you had to bushwack through tons of keawe trees.Theses trees are hard wood trees that are filled with thorns, wearing only shorts and rubber slippers, we were ripped to shreds before we limped into the crater. The first thing I remember was the sweet aroma of pakalolo, and then santana took the stage. I remember Neal Schon was so young and he had the "deer in the headlights" look on his face, the music was awsom!
