Robert Temple Armstrong is Lord of Ilminster (Baron Armstrong of Ilminster GCB, CVO ,born 30 March 1927) and son of Sir Thomas Henry Wait Armstrong. Lord Armstrong has Political interests in the Arts, museums and galleries and public service. Countries of interest to Lord Armstrong include France. Lord Armstrong was educated at the Dragon School, Eton, where he was a King's Scholar, and Christ Church, Oxford, where he read Greats.
In a long civil service career, Armstrong worked in several departments, including HM Treasury and the Home Office. From 1970 to 1975 he served as the Principal Private Secretary to the Prime Minister. He was knighted in 1978. From 1979 to 1987, he served as Secretary of the Cabinet under Margaret Thatcher. He was subsequently made a life peer as Baron Armstrong of Ilminster, of Ashill in the County of Somerset in 1988, and sits as a crossbencher. He is credited with bringing the phrase "economical with the truth" into popular usage, after he used it during the Spycatcher trial in 1986. From 1994 to 2006 Armstrong was Chancellor of the University of Hull.
Sir Thomas Henry Wait Armstrong (15 June 1898 – 26 June 1994) was an English organist, conductor, educationalist and adjudicator. He had a substantial influence on British music for well over half a century. From 1955 to 1968 he was principal of the Royal Academy of Music. He was knighted in 1958 for his services to music. In 1926 Armstrong married Hester Draper, daughter of the Rev. W. H. Draper who was Master of the Temple.
Hillary Armstrong is a Member of Parliament for North West Durham.The daughter of Labour MP Ernest Armstrong, Hillary Armstrong was shortlisted for the vacant Sedgefield constituency in 1983, only to lose out to Tony Blair. Armstrong is married to Paul Corrigan. MP Hillary Armstrong was educated at Monkwearmouth Grammar School (her Who's Who entry lists Monkwearmouth School but Sunderland secondary schools were selective until the early 1970s), the West Ham College of Technology (BSc) and the University of Birmingham (Diploma in Social Work). A former social worker and university lecturer, Armstrong worked for VSO in Kenya before entering politics. She was first elected as Durham County Councillor for Crook North Division in 1985.
Ernest Armstrong, PC (12 January 1915 – 8 July 1996) was a British Labour Party politician.
Armstrong was educated at Wolsingham Grammar School and City of Leeds Teacher Training College, and ultimately became a headmaster. He served as a councillor on Sunderland Borough Council and chaired its education committee.
Defeated by the Conservative incumbent in Sunderland South in the 1959 General election, Armstrong was Member of Parliament for North West Durham from 1964 until his retirement in 1987. His daughter, Hilary Armstrong, was his successor.
Armstrong served as a parliamentary private secretary from 1965, and a Labour whip, and junior minister for Education and Science (1974–1975) and the Environment (1975–1979). After Labour lost the 1979 general election, he served as a Deputy Speaker.
After his retirement, Armstrong acted as political adviser to the BBC's production of the political drama "House of Cards".
