The role of Christopher Pike, original captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise, has been cast in J.J. Abrams' upcoming reboot of the "Star Trek" franchise.

Actually, Robert April was the first captain of the Enterprise NCC-1701, although he was never seen on camera.

The original "Star Trek" pilot, "The Cage," was later used (with a framing device) in the two-part original series episode "The Menagerie." But if you're reading this page, you probably knew that already.

April appeared on-screen in the animated series, which is generally not considered to be canon. I've found no reference to him being mentioned in a canon production; neither have I found one stating that his status as first captain of the NCC-1701 Enterprise has been contradicted in the canon.

He's a great actor, but I was hoping for a bigger name....maybe their budgets running low so they settled on him.

Actually, I think Jonathan Archer was the first captain of the "Starship" Enterprise!(Yeah, you did qualify it with NCC-1701; Archer commanded the NX-01.) I'm not even going to attempt to consider the Space Shuttle Enterprise, or aircraft carrier Enterprise, or ....
