I am pleading to anyone, specially to Mrs. Bo Derek to help our Humane Society stop the abuse existintg in my island against horses. If you ever visit, which would be a blessing, you will see a great number of stray horses out in the streets. They're infested with parasites, malnourished, you can see every bone in their body. Sometimes you see them dead on the street because the delinquents that steal them tie them to a fence without food and water and forget about them. They also ride them on hot concrete without shoes. They also think that by beating the horse to death is the way the horse will obey. The Puerto Rico Forum for Animal Rights (puertoricoforumforanimalright s@yahoogroups.com) is trying to have the police commissioner and the public housing administration work with them to help this problem. The truth is that our governor does not care and we don't get the support we need. I only hope that someone outside Puerto Rico can make a lot of noise to help us change this situation, not just for the horses, but for all the other strays we find in the streets. I wrote to Animal Planet, never got a response. I thought that if they would come and do a special on this it would help. No such luck. I've written to other Humane Societies in the US, but they really can't help us, they have their own problems. This is like a last plea for help. I know that having someone like Bo Derek involved, and that with letters the members in this forum can write to our government , our police commissioner and to anyone who could make a difference, this situation will improve. I'm not concerned with embarrassing our government, because they have done a pretty good job on their own. Puerto Rico is a beautiful island and we're not a third world country. We are a Commonwealth of the US. I know that if we were a state this would not be happening, but until then, we need all the help we can get.
Please write to the forum to the above email, and let us know that we can count on you to help us win this war. I also give authorization to use this letter if it helps our cause in any way. Thank you and God Bless you all. Lourdes Weisgerber,RN,BSN |

Please give me information as to WHO takes care of this. I have 2 horses that I was paying someone to take of them and they left my horses abandones without water for 4 days. I went to the police and Recursos naturales and they all told me the same thing, I AM WAITING MY TIME" So if you have a # where I could have the person convicted, then please by all means give me that # so I could have something resolved. In this situation, the lady is not exagerating because I am going through this. It might not happen in PONCE but it's surely happening in the east of the island.

The problem with animal abuse in Puerto Rico continues without any regards from the government. Mr. Colon, I am not exagerating. Just open your eyes and observe what happens in our streets. I have contacted the Humane Society and they have individual members that have their own rescues in their farms or their homes. You can contact the shelter in Ponce, talk to Waleska who is the director of the shelter now and is someone who really cares. You can also contact Sarin at the SPCA if you see any abuse being commited against an animal. There is also an excellent veterinarian who goe all over the island sterilizing pets for a very low price. His name is Dr. Jose Rivera . He sterilized my two strays right in my house. There should be more people who care enough to do something positive in trying to solve this problem.

Sorry Harold, OPEN YOUR EYES!!I too live in Puerto Rico. In Fact I found this page while trying to gather info to start a petition to urge our government to start complying with its own municipal laws in regard to animal welfare, animal control, & enforcement of the the law that each municipality of P.R provide & manage a humane anumal shelter {only about 6 municipalities are in compliance of this law} Lourdes Weisgerber is NOT Exagerating, and I commend her for caring !!!
