Finally an accurate review of Florida Grand Opera.

As with his earlier "Cosi" review, Mr. Budmen demonstrates his understanding of operatic music and styles and writes a beautifully descriptive and truthful review.

I have no dog in this hunt.

But as someone who listens carefully to music, plays it himself, reads about it, sometimes even writes about it, and has traveled many miles to see three FGO performances in the past year -- I have to say I find the Sun-Sentinel reviewer embarrassingly deficient in anything close to a dilettante's knowledge of opera. The Herald critic has a snide voice I don't care for. But his observations are keenly made, specifically elucidated, and, I fear, closer to the mark.

Thank goodness that Lawrence Budmen is writing the reviews now. If I had to sit through another of Jack Zink's awful reviews, I was going to rip out what is left of my hair. Zink is at best a mediocre theater critic and he was an embarrassingly inept opera critic.

The personal agenda that Larry Johnson has against Stewart Robertson is obvious and goes back several years. People in the opera intelligentsia community will tell you that Maestro Robertson has a reputation as one of the clearest conductors in all of opera. He is unfortunately hamstrung by the orchestra's contract, and does the best he can with the limited talent (especially the brass) and resources placed in front of him.

I have worked with dozens of excellent conductors, including Eduardo Mata, Michael Tilson Thomas, Moses Hogan, Andre Thomas, and others, and I can tell you that Stewart Robertson is as good as any of them.
