Former astronaut and state legislator Harrison Schmitt has withdrawn his nomination to become New Mexico's head of the department of Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department, the latest setback as the state's new Republican governor tries to reverse her Democratic predecessor's environmental regulations.

Once again, bravo and kudos to Harrison Schmitt, who not only refused background scrutiny, but made a timely withdrawal from an administration's inevitably sinking ship. Just appoint a yes man partisan and get it over with. If the only goal here is to reverse the progresses of Richardson's tenure, then why not utilize gap-toothed Pearce-he can launch Santa Fe huggers all the way to the oil patch with the rest of the spit he hurls.

I believe that New Mexico is also 'under water' on it's union retirement fund.
All those socialist ideas work great when they are financed by the public, but when the public gets tired of excessive taxes then they elect someone to correct it and inevitably there are some that think the end of the world is at hand.
