Bill Moyers Journal: Capitalism Has Swamped Democracy

There are 557 comments on the www.pbs.org story from Jun 13, 2009, titled Bill Moyers Journal: Capitalism Has Swamped Democracy. In it, www.pbs.org reports that:

BILL MOYERS: What has happened to capitalism that has led it to the abyss?

ROBERT REICH: Essentially, capitalism has swamped democracy. You see, there's no such thing really as pure capitalism without rules and regulations that set limits on profit making, because otherwise it's everybody out for themselves. Otherwise, nobody can trust anybody. Otherwise, it's the law of the jungle.

I mean, we rely upon government to set the boundaries. This can't happen because it's fraud. That can't happen because you're stealing something. This can't happen because you're imposing a huge burden on other people. But unless you have a democratic system that allows the rules to be created not by the companies but by the people and the people's representatives reflecting what the public needs, not what the corporations need, you're going to have a system that is not a democracy and it's not democratic capitalism. It's super capitalism without the democracy.

socialism isnt going to work if you dont have a job, you have to keep the industry here or no jobs. you can pay people to build roads and help people and do civil service work but if the government doesnt get any revenue (Taxes)From jobs that are supply and demand driven. it wont work. you can only print so much pretend money, it will be done on borrowed money. The reasons companies go out of bussiness is because of borrowed money. if the banks dont have money backed by gold or other collateral, they cant loan it.We have been using money on faith alone and the faith is about gone.

I could see how you might think that, listening to the media at that time.
But too many factual economic records to list were broken in 2007.
The government cannot fix the economy, all the government can do is create a playing field that encourages the flow and growth of business.
It can do this by:
1. Low taxation
2. Minimal interference with free markets.
3. Maintain fair competition (even playing field)
4. Investing in technologies and IP protection (USPTO).
Try not to be quite so condesending and try a little more READING.

While the Iraqi government continued its large-scale military assault in Basra, the NPR reporter’s voice from Iraq was unequivocal this morning:“There is no doubt that this operation needed to happen.”
Such flat-out statements, uttered with journalistic tones and without attribution, are routine for the U.S. media establishment. In the “War Made Easy” documentary film, I put it this way:“If you’re pro-war, you’re objective. But if you’re anti-war, you’re biased. And often, a news anchor will get no flak at all for making statements that are supportive of a war and wouldn’t dream of making a statement that’s against a war.”
So it goes at NPR News, where — on “Morning Edition” as well as the evening program “All Things Considered”— the sense and sensibilities tend to be neatly aligned with the outlooks of official Washington. The critical aspects of reporting largely amount to complaints about policy shortcomings that are tactical; the underlying and shared assumptions are imperial. Washington’s prerogatives are evident when the media window on the world is tinted red-white-and-blue.

You want to go back to that, Oops sorry you do because you voted for Obama.
Just wait until the dollar goes over the cliff. The only way we can ever pay off this debt is to defalte the dollar so badly that a trillion dollars is chump change. When that happens we won't be able to import squat. Then China will have us over barrel since everything we buy is made there. Outsourcing all our manufacturing leaves us extremely vulnerable.

Under Bush, a New Age of Prepackaged TV News
March 13, 2005 / http://tinyurl.com/ko7ap
It is the kind of TV news coverage every president covets.

"Thank you, Bush. Thank you, U.S.A.," a jubilant Iraqi-American told a camera crew in Kansas City for a segment about reaction to the fall of Baghdad. A second report told of "another success" in the Bush administration's "drive to strengthen aviation security"; the reporter called it "one of the most remarkable campaigns in aviation history." A third segment, broadcast in January, described the administration's determination to open markets for American farmers.

To a viewer, each report looked like any other 90-second segment on the local news. In fact, the federal government produced all three. The report from Kansas City was made by the State Department. The "reporter" covering airport safety was actually a public relations professional working under a false name for the Transportation Security Administration. The farming segment was done by the Agriculture Department's office of communications.

Under the Bush administration, the federal government has aggressively used a well-established tool of public relations: the prepackaged, ready-to-serve news report that major corporations have long distributed to TV stations to pitch everything from headache remedies to auto insurance. In all, at least 20 federal agencies, including the Defense Department and the Census Bureau, have made and distributed hundreds of television news segments in the past four years, records and interviews show. Many were subsequently broadcast on local stations across the country without any acknowledgement of the government's role in their production.

Ghosts in the Media Machine

"State-run media" is a phrase normally reserved for regimes such as North Korea that manipulate and censor all public information. Media in the United States were thought to be immune to such autocratic control, but recent maneuvers by the White House should make Americans wonder how free our press actually is.

In early 2005, several "journalists" were exposed as propagandists on the administration's payroll. We then learned that broadcasters routinely air government-funded video news releases without disclosing their source; the White House has set aside billions in taxpayer dollars to hire public relations firms and infiltrate our news system with . The major problem with the mainstream media is they parrot all the lies and half-truths that both political hacks are saying. Reps & Dems

Clear Channel is hardwired into the Bush political machine. The company co-chair is Tom Hicks, who purchased the Texas Rangers baseball team in 1998 from Bush Jr. That deal made Bush Junior a multi-millionaire. Michael Powell is a neo-confederate of the worst kind. He tried to hijack the FCC to deregulate and give away the public airwaves to his corporate cronies. Expecting Fox News to report real news is about as silly as waiting for Dick Cheney and George Bush to tell the truth. Clinton / Gore Telecommunications Act of 1996 sponsored giveaway of our public airwaves removed long-standing restrictions. Rupert Murdoch owns Fox. General Electric owns NBC, MSNBC, CNBC. Time Warner AOL owns CNN. Disney owns ABC. Viacom owns CBS. All Corporate Media. NBC GE & CBS Westinghouse does $BILLIONS with Pentagon for over 60 years.

Silvio Berlusconi was the prime minister of Italy and owns state television networks, radio stations, three of Italy’s four commercial television networks, two big publishing houses, two national newspapers, fifty magazines, Italy’s largest movie and distribution company. Rupert Murdoch just happens to be Silvio Berlusconi’s best friend and as of July 31, all of Italy’s satellite hookups were switched automatically to Murdoch’s Sky Italia.

Frank Sesno On Psyops Interns at CNN

Roaming around the non-unionized First Union Center where the convention is taking place, Democracy Now! caught up with Frank Sesno, Vice President of CNN News. We asked him about recently exposed story that CNN was using Army Psychological Operations, or Psyops people as news interns.

Why Were Government Propaganda Experts Working On News At CNN?
3/27/00 / http://tinyurl.com/3dllel
Reports in the Dutch newspaper Trouw (2/21/00, 2/25/00) and France's Intelligence Newsletter (2/17/00) have revealed that several officers from the US Army's 4th Psychological Operations (PSYOPS) Group at Ft. Bragg worked in the news division at CNN's Atlanta headquarters last year, starting in the final days of the Kosovo War.

In the U.S. media, so far only Alexander Cockburn, columnist for The Nation and co-editor of the newsletter CounterPunch, has picked up on the story. Cockburn's column on the subject is available at www.counterpunch.org .

The story is disturbing. In the 1980s, officers from the 4th Army PSYOPS group staffed the National Security Council's Office of Public Diplomacy (OPD), a shadowy government propaganda agency that planted stories in the U.S. media supporting the Reagan Administration's Central America policies.

A senior US official described OPD as a "vast psychological warfare operation of the kind the military conducts to influence a population in enemy territory." (Miami Herald, 7/19/87) An investigation by the congressional General Accounting Office found that OPD had engaged in "prohibited, covert propaganda activities," and the office was soon shut down as a result of the Iran-Contra investigations. But the 4th PSYOPS group still operates.

CNN has always maintained a close relationship with the Pentagon. Getting access to top military officials is a necessity for a network that stakes its reputation on being first on the ground during wars and other military operations.

Colonel Gardiner was a frequent military analyst for PBS news hour, the BBC, and NPR during Iraq war II. www.tinyurl.com/86pgd

The Colonel became horrified when he was seeing and hearing the news about Iraq. The Bush administration had turned psychological warfare operations against our own American citizenry.

No longer were just foreign enemies being targeted for coercion and deception. Now the target was the United States public.

fatally flawed logic:

"You see, there's no such thing really as pure capitalism without rules and regulations that set limits on profit making, because otherwise it's everybody out for themselves. Otherwise, nobody can trust anybody. Otherwise, it's the law of the jungle."

1. rules and regulations do not change *human nature*

2. it isn't *free markets* running the U.S. in the ground, thus *not* capitalism. There's no market for the American Executive Model, there's no market to have Financial U.S. walking in/out of the Fed. Reserve w/ freshly printed cash, and more.
