The 2006 Tanglewood performance of "What Next?" was the U.S. stage premiere of the work. The world premiere was staged at the at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Berlin on Sept. 16, 1999, directed by Nicholas Brieger, conducted by Daniel Barenboim, and with Hilary Summers as Stella, the role Ms. Hill sang at Tanglewood.
