Director kicked off flight for 'fatness'

Full story: Long Beach Press-Telegram

Director Kevin Smith was kicked off a Southwest flight from Oakland to Burbank for being overweight, and is spurning the airline's apology, as an association of overweight travelers called for a boycott of the airline.

Are we all being too sensitive now? What about the person (likely skinny) next to him who has to "subsidize" his/her space for the fat. I bet no one asked that passenger about his feeling. It appears Smith was offered with cash voucher but he refused to take it. Seems like Smith just want to use this for publicity. We may feel feel sorry for the incident, but don't feel sorry for Smith if he continue to use being fat as an excuse for preferential treatments.

Safety? I don't think so. he probably had an attitude when he got on and the sky waitress took offense. If it is a safety issue then all the tards, drunks and freaks that get on a southwest flight should be booted. I like southwest but it really is the city bus of flying.

He has a movie coming out in a couple weeks. This reeks of being some publicity stunt. He is just looking for attention.

I agree with John. The dude has some bucks, he can afford business or first class on another airline.

The man needed two seats, fine. There was only one available on this flight on a standby basis. He should never have been given the single standby seat.

Airlines apologizing to him? You know the drill, your rights end where another persons begins. If you need 2 seats to sit comfortably, then you need to buy 2 tickets. The airline will lose a passenger regardless, either the passenger who didn't buy 2 seats, or the passenger who was pinned next him/her.

Yes, the airline seats and aisles are very narrow.

I am a medium sized person and wouldn't want to be seated next to someone who spilled over into my seating space.

Also, it is difficult for larger people to walk down the aisle it takes them longer. I wouln't want to be behind them in an emergency exit situation.

If the airlines increase the seat size and aisle space then the plane will have to be larger and cost more. Then travelers will face a higher fare.

Mr. Smith, you're FAT. Deal with it and stop whining that you are being mistreated. YOU made yourself that way, and YOU are the only one who can change it.

What they need is a specific policy (ie. no pasengers over 225 lbs). I wouldn't like it. I'm fat (275 lbs). I've ridden southwest with no problems, and I'm sure I'm fatter than silent bob. The problem is that when rules are non-specific, and randomly enforced, passengers don't know what to expect until after they've wasted their time and have been publicly embarrased.

I would be willing to give odds that this fatty would be first in line, demanding decent hard working travelers who smoke tobacco be booted off the plane. What goes around eventually comes around.

Hells Bells! Why don't they make a few seats bigger for large people. Would you call the front line of any football team FAT? There are certain locations on the flight where a few seats could be wider. They make the seats like socks - one size is suppose to fit all and they don't. Also look behind you on your next trip and see if the tall person has any leg room before you recline.

It's not about sensitivity but reality. Some folks are bigger and taller than others and not necessarily fat. So grow up and realize that the airline seat size is the problem, not the people.

Doug.

Well, in that case, the airline was simply wrong.
