Mullah Music? It was banned in Afghanistan. I guess Germans are not in league with the Great Satan; but what of their prostitution districts? If the mullahs hate our Western culture, it must be in parts.

How interesting and exciting to see that the Teheran Philharmonic is not only performing, but on tour. As a former member (1968-1970) I felt sure the orchestra had fallen on hard times and was most likely finished. Given the history of the ensemble - initially started by musicians carted down from Tabriz (Armenian)by the former Shah's father to train bandsmen for the military and later formally installed as the Philharmonic upon the last Shah's coronation in the 60s - I am surprised that this present government would be at all interested in putting up with the musicians....musicians are musicians, after all, and by the time I played with them most of the members were trained Iranian locals.

Well, it has been some time since I posted my comments on the tour of the Teheran Phil. Whoever wrote the above repsonse really does not understand English, I guess, or did not get my comments. I lived in Teheren, played in the orch for several years and learned the language well enough. I must say, it was not always easy in some quarters for the orch musicians, even in the days of the Shah.(Many would keep their instruments in the trunks of their cars when going into more traditional neighborhoods.) I was surprised to see that the orch was functioning in good order after many of the changes and turmoil but also very pleased. Since music of most any kind is basically forbidden by the most extreme religious leaders how can one not be surprised that the orchestra is not only thriving, but on tour. My 'world' sir, is not so little as you may think and you are wrong to think that politics and music are not often mixed......good grief, what world do you live in?
