Being a Criminology major at one of the top universities in the USA, I am astounded and upset that my Criminologist professors never told me this before.
How about this explanation
High death rates occur in states with large poverty stricken communities.
Border and gang wars due to close proximity of the State and Mexico.
Drug wars and Mexican organized crime. Mexican type crime (Kidnapping, Coyotes, drug and gun running) is invading AZ.
It would be immoral to disarm citizens there.
Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and other Southern States have horrific poverty issues. Include racism and you have horrible murder rates and horrible quality of life.
