The Boland Amendment
The Sandinista government was freely elected by the Nicaraguan people. However, because of the fact that the Reagan administration was strongly opposed to their ideological position, it was falsely claimed that the election was a sham. This was used as an excuse to increase support for the Nicaraguan Contras, which were essentially a rightist terror organization
The Reagan administration constantly attempted to downplay the evil nature of the Contras, but reports of their atrocities eventually resulted in a large sector of the American public turning against the administration's policy of support for the Contras.
When it was discovered that the CIA had directly engaged in acts of sabotage in Nicaragua, it lead to the earlier Boland amendments, but the administration continued to support the Contras, because the early versions did not prohibit all support. What finally brought about the final version, in which all military funding support for the Contras was prohibited, was the international scandal which resulted from the CIA placing mines in the harbors of both the east and west coasts of Nicaragua, which resulted in the deaths of civilians, not to mention being an act of war.
With the Boland Amendment, the US was supposed to no longer be providing monetary support for the "military" operations of the Contras. However, a plan was cooked up to circumvent this restriction. Sell arms (mainly anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles) to supposed moderate elements in the government in Iran, which would in turn help secure the release of American hostages still being held by the Islamic fundamentalist group which later became known as Hezbollah.
The funds from the illegal sale of weapons were used (illegally) to continue support of the Contas. Reagan denied knowing anything about "The Enterprise" as the operation was known, but in his book Under Fire: An American Story Oliver North says that Reagan knew about it and approved of it.

I agree. One of the most glaring betrayals of the public trust committed by Obama was the Dream Act.......rewarding illegal foreign nationals for igoring our Immigration Laws.
If America had a spine or a backbone he might have been impeached for encouraging illegals to colonize America.

The US gives billions of dollars annually in aid (and not just to Israel for those Israel whiners) to other countries, provides humanitarian support, forgives the debt of other countries and lends troops in times of military conflict (which shouldn't be confused with invading another country, such as Iraq).
When in England, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of
'empire building' by George Bush.
He answered by saying,
"Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return."
