Obama to announce loan help for U.S. nuclear power

The Obama administration, advancing nuclear power use to help cut greenhouse gas emissions, will announce on Tuesday an $8.3 billion loan guarantee to help Southern Co build two reactors, a government official told Reuters.

They were not exactly the same, no. But they had the common elements of
1: no containment vessel (just steel)
2: flammable graphic moderator
3: high running temperature
4: the physics of "xenon poisoning" doesn't change because the reactor is in the USA.
I repeat the point. IF these reactors were MISHANDLED in the same way as Chernobyl, they would have produced a similar incident to Chernoby. Now stop diddling about irrelevant trivia like air cooling vs helium cooling.
Air cooling and helium cooling are the point as they are not water cooling which at Chernobyl is the point!
Let us just take xenon poisoning I never spoke of the "PHYSICS" of xenon poisoning what I said was the operators had no clue about it. That is why after the reactor operated for it period of time the inertial turbine generator rotation on supplying electric power to the RCP's was to be done on the first shutdown. However the plant was called and told to go back up in power and get onto the grid for another 12 to 24 hours. When they went to S/D the reactor they thought it was more important to do the test then control the reactor which they had immediate problems doing once under 10% power. Even with this signal they continued to ignore every safety system as well as station operating procedures to conduct the test. What I am implying by this is operators in western world reactors know about xenon not just engineers.
As far as nuclear graphite burning well here is one of thousands of sources rebuking that. http://nucleargreen.blogspot.com/2011/04/did-...
Now let's stop the diddling about "MISHANDLING"

You confirm the fact that Chernobyl was caused by a graphite reactor with no containment vessel being MISHANDLED, going to full power after a dangerous period where the reactor was 'poisoned' by xenon 135.

Your only reason for claiming that the US could not have such a mishap is that US reactor personnel are somehow SMARTER than the Russian?.

Did you see the last election?? Have you heard of Donald Trump? Cold War Rhetoric much?

What an ass.

No, sugarplum

There are no civilian positive void coefficient reactors in US, so there is no posibility of a power surge like at Chernobyl.

The type of Soviet nuclear accident possible is the Khyshtym/Mayak type accident (like at Fukushima). But Chernobyl power surge is right out.

Water cooling (Positive Void Coefficient) was only ONE element of the problem. Certainly gas cooled reactors have a ZERO void coefficient but the real problem was STUPIDITY and that is not a Russian Monopoly. Just look in the mirror..

It was not stupidity it was a lack of knowledge the Russians don't train their operators the way the west does. You certainly don't match your name handle

No, honey, no, no no.

Of course should any US reactors prove to bhe actually positive void, then, yes, it'd be huge news and a huge scandal.

As long as the US reactors are negative void, TMI remains the worst case scenario, with the Khyshtym/Fukushima type disaster possible for improperly stored high activity spent fuel.

Right. Lack of education or low education standards are rampant in Russia and absent in the USA.. Nice twist. But still cold war bullshit. Proof of this is waiting for you. Just look in the mirror.

Chernobyl was identical to ALL accidents. A combination of human error and system limits. Heard about the Space Shuttle Columbia? Now are you saying that NASA or Thiokol engineers were 'lacking in knowledge'.

You are an arrogant idiot. What a dweeb.

FACT is that high temperature graphite reactors with no containment could just as easily have gone critical in the USA. And TMI was LUCKY, not smart. The Fukishima reactor was an early design that has many copies in the USA. A similar flooding or damage to the active cooling would have caused a totally similar disaster in the USA.

Being in the USA is NOT a guardian against stupidity, human error, or design flaws. All it means is that idiots like you won't SEE the problems as problems but believe 'it can't happen here'. Of course, it can. Nothing is unique about USA soil.

As a bummed-out re-pubic-lick-un, who has sour grapes about Pres.Obama out-running two slickster re-pubic-lick-un candidates in a row, you need to get original material. The old re-pubic-lick-un stuff has been pumped for decades.... just say the same things, but change the names. I just chastised another re-pubic-lick-un, named 'lastoutlaw', with a line of BS greater than yours.

By being aggressive, re-pubic-lick-uns disguise their self-righteousness as patriotism.
