Dixie Chicks, country fans remain at odds

Full story: The Daily Advertiser

The Dixie Chicks are not ready to make nice, and, it seems, Acadiana country music fans aren't either.

Yah listen to this quote from Emily Robison:
"The entire country may disagree with me, but I don't understand the necessity for patriotism," Maines resumes, through gritted teeth. "Why do you have to be a patriot? About what? This land is our land? Why? You can like where you live and like your life, but as for loving the whole country´┐Ż I don't see why people care about patriotism."
What idiots they are.

Considering thee US Population is greater than 300 million, that aint didly squat in terms of the reach of their "ideas." Wish theyd just shut up and sing. After they're entertainers right, and not political commentators. If they dont like people criticizing their viewpoints than they should stick to the guitar playing.

So they have a bit of talent. That is no excuse to patronize these anti-American pieces of trash.

Well you seem pretty strong about your view on them, and no one is getting upset at you. So why dont you go think what you want and let them think what they want. They may be famous artists but they are people too. And over half the people in this country do not feel a need to be patriotic with a president like bush. Hell he spends more time trying to better other countries when really he should be worried about the one he is suppose to be running.

Speaking as a Canadian... If someone up here said they were ashamed the Prime Minister came from their province... we'd laugh and agree XD

But moving on... I can understand people disagreeing with them, that is to be expected. What I don't understand is the extent it has gone to. People shouting for them to be arrested, death threats, radio and tv not playing them - the Red Cross not accepting a million dollars, for crying out loud! Who in their right mind, running a non-profit organization, doesn't accept a million dollars?

As for the record - it's absolutely amazing, and I think it's a shame that people aren't buying it. Everyone should have the chance to hear it, even if you don't agree with them. I'm in no position to agree or disagree, but I'm behind them whole heartedly. Why? Because they should definitely be admired. Who else would go through all this crap and still refuse to do so much as apoligize?

If only you guys could have been at the concert in Ottawa two days ago. I've never seen anything like it in my life... They got a standing ovation for just playing the trailer for "Shut up and Sing"... but when they sang "Not Ready to Make Nice"? It was absolultely breath taking. We all stood, screaming and clapping with all our might. They turned down the lights in an attempt to make us calm down, but even then we didn't... it took Natalie standing there grinning at us and attempting to speak multiple times before anyone even started to sit down. My hands were numb, my voice was cracking, but damned if I was going to stop.

Comparing CD sales to the total U.S. population is ridiculous. Not everyone buys CDs and those who do are buying fewer, partly because of internet music services. Of the many CDs that have been released this year, how many others have sold 1 million copies in four weeks? That is the real test. No one on these boards has disputed the fact that the current CD has sold fewer copies than their last one. So let's just agree that their CD sales are down and move on. And keep in mind, no one is forcing you to listen to them.

I'm sure their show is really entertaining and that "NRTMN" is wonderful to hear in person.

You see, here in America, we're "supposed" to have something called "free speech" but what that REALLY means is agreeing with the supposed majority. So, for example, if someone is a singer/musician and his or her fan base is primarily country and he or she exercises his or her right to free speech and that speech somehow opposes the president, the government, the bible, the flag, or the war, he or she will be condemned and persecuted and all hell and hysteria will break loose. CDs will be be bulldozed, threats will be made, children will be taught to hate a singer, concert ticket sales will drop, people debating the issue will curse and scream at each other, and the true right to free speech will dwindle ... bit by bit.

All because of ... 15 words.

America, where is your logic and sense??

i am from Australia.. so obviously i am not patriotic to America.. but my country has been effected by this "war" and i believe that Natalie had the right to say what she feels...
People here criticise John Howard everyday.. but the difference is no one here HATES people for speaking their mind its just not worth getting upset over. if you dont believe what they say then don't listen to them, the Dixie Chicks don't care they have plenty of money they play the music for the people who want to listen and sorry to be blunt but the pople who dont want to can get stuffed because no one cares whether you listen to them or not!
it's a ridiculous to think that a person can be truly HATED for saying a few words.. come on... she didnt even say anything that bad! and the fact that Bush felt the need to respond to her comment just shows how truly justified she is to be ashamed of him! i woul dbe ashemed if i has voted him into power as well

They were awesome when I saw them as well. And I'll say it here and now, I am embarrassed the Prime Minister is from Canada period. He needs to get his head out of Bush's ass and do what is right for Canada. Though I will say he is not as bad as I thought he would be when he was first elected. though that could be because he has a minority government. This being said, it doesn't mean I am embarrssed about Canada or being a Canadian. I wouldn't live in another country as I think Canada is the best.

I don't care if people don't buy their albums or go to their concerts, but death threats, teaching your child to hate? That is wrong. Say what YOU like about the DC but don't teach a child to hate. If you teach a child from that age to hate what is he/she going to turn into?

i couldn't agree with you more! no one cares whether people buy the DC album even they dont care.. but to make them fear for their lives is ridiculous and just plain wrong... forget about it being un-American its not human!
i also have the same problem here in Australia.. John Howard also needs to get his head out of Bush's ass and do whats best for Australia.. it amazes me how Bush has gathered so many allies when he's a tool...

thank you mwrtb^^ nice to be agreed with for once XD

Laurie: I just stay out of politics XD the chicks have dragged me into it... but I don't give a damn who the prime minister is, because there hasn't been one in my lifetime that actually made any difference compared to the one before him. Safest thing to do is to stay a safe distance away and hope they let you run your life. Frankly, even though they're all idiots, I'm glad they're from Canada. If they weren't, we'd be starting the wars, too. I don't think a non-Canadian government would ever last here. People up here have such different viewpoints from everyone else. You're right about one thing, though: Quit worrying about the States and start worrying about Canada. They don't deserve the amount of control they have over us.

I saw them in Edmonton - and was star struck in the front row! A moving experience - they sing and play with such conviction. As for comments about people wishing htey would just "shut up and sing" and stay out of politics - singers have always played a part in voicing politics - ever listen to anything from the 60s - Dylan, anyone? You start to question whether citizens are becomming numb socially, what about forcing change as citizens and not accepting what your gov't does when you dissagree. It seems as though you can keep the majority of citizens happy as long as the next episode of American Idol is on or you throw a "God Bless America" in there somewhere. AS for our Prime Minister, I also wish he'd get his head out of Bush's ass and realize that free trade is not absolute and we need to take some presedence for environmental protection. As for the Chicks - keep on rockin' the free world - it's nice to know that someones willing to put their reputation out for what they believe in.
