For all the grousing that goes on about the overriding liberalism of Hollywood, its old-vanguard action stars -- Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis -- are confirmed Republicans.

I am surprised she actually gave a somewhat go review without a personal agenda.

This movie is based on a book which involves the assasination of a Salvadoran cardinal or bishop with the presential assasination attempt as cover. Phoebe you need to take the time to do a little more research on your topic and feed your subversive needs somewhere else.

After reading dozens of reviews I think I have found the one that recognizes best the essense of Shooter. It is indeed a "rare breed" of film that blows things up while daring to speaking to truth -- as the director sees it. Why is this taboo to some? I think it's inventive, and I would say the same were the angle coming from the right. Shamefully, I think much of the "can't make up it's mind whether it wants to be an action flick or drama" and other criticism is politically motivated. Again, why it is that some critics have such a hard time with an action film that dares to do more than just shoot, chase, and blow-em-up? Fuqua's touch here is deft indeed, and it is more than fine by me that his voice is included in the film he directs. It should, at least, be allowed to be.

danny raf,

My criticism has not a thing to do with the director 'speaking the truth'. It goes to the fact that the original book has not a thing to do with the current administration or an acutal presidential assaination. Maybe we could do an update of Shakesphere in a movie with Bush as Caesar and then Cheney and the cabinet could use bird shot to put him down. Sometimes the original story should stand on its own.

My post wasn't a response to your post Fin, it was a criticism of critics who are closed-minded and can't tolerate anything that even slightly blurs genre, unless of course it is blurred in a direction they favor.
Sometimes the original story should stand on its own, I agree, but creative license in Hollywood has come mean that they who buy the rights can twist and turn a thing as they see fit.
It's very funny though, the image of Bush, white robed and crowned as Caesar, being shot at and chased through the royal gardens by a similarly dressed, sling shot toting maniacal Cheney!
